Initially this purchase was amazing. My school's bookstore was selling this for about $80 and I was able to buy it for less than $40! When it arrived, this book was immaculate, practically new. It was in perfect condition, making me even more excited about my purchase. After about 2 weeks of using this book, I found out it is missing the entire appendix. At first, I didn't think it would matter. After discussing it with my fellow classmates, I find out the appendix is full of helpful information, practice chapter tests & answers, example forms, need to know medical codes and so much more. I am so disappointed and now have to go out and purchase another book just so I can have access to this information. I realize I got the book at an amazing discount, however, if the book is going to be missing huge chunks of information, that should be disclosed to any potential buyer.

I am an adjunct professor at Utah Valley University teaching a Computer Science course in "Telecommunications and Voice over IP (VoIP)" and this is a great book! Unfortunately, I discovered the book too late to order for the class this year (hesitant due to the high price), but I am glad I found it. I used the book throughout this year's class (Jan-Apr) and it is now the textbook for the Spring 2010 class.

The Illustrated Man of Letters

John Forster was Dickens's best friend and closest companion for almost the entirety of his adult life. His biography of the great man, which came out soon after Dickens's death, surprised Victorian readers with the truths it laid out about Dickens's childhood traumas (particularly working in a blacking factory when his father was in debtors' prison). It remains one of the most famous of all English biographies, and was reissued in this beautiful edition in 2011, the bicentenary year of Dickens' birth. Weighing in at more than five pounds, this beautiful new edition comes complete with all kinds of rare images and with helpful and illuminating supporting materials drawn from a number of media. The editor, Holly Furneaux, should be proud of the splendid work she did assembling this text, which should be indispensable for any Dickens fan or scholar.

the quality of the book is...well...it's like a photocopy of the original book and since getting an original edition would mean having to sell my house, i am grateful for this beautiful and well copied piece. the cover is gorgeous, isn't it? i've dabbled in the reading of it, but have been wanting a copy of Forster's biographical Dickens for a long time. i recommend it, but it is odd to get used to the way the original manuscript sits rather small on each page...

Great handbook

This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is serious about graphic layout. It is not a type book; it does not review fonts individually. Rather, it considers type as a visual element. Accessibly written, someone new to the field could use it, as well as experienced graphic artists and those for whom the page is important. A good investment for the artist on a budget, too.

great additions!

I've used "Thinking with Type" for the last year and a half in the typography classes that I teach. I thought the first edition was a useful tool. Then one of my students ordered this one, and let me look at it...and I was amazed at all of the new information (like a separate page each for numbers, punctuation, and ornaments) and examples that had been added. I ordered it for myself as soon as possible, and will be recommending the second edition to all of my students from now on.
