Gr 3-6-In this haunted guidebook, readers are asked, "Do you believe in ghosts?" and told to "-read on, IF YOU DARE-." The scares are delivered as promised. White House ghosts, the infamous Winchester House of San Jose, Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau of New Orleans, and so much more are offered to those looking to have a fright or two. The chapters are short-most are two or three pages long. The drawings and few scattered photographs are not enough to entice readers. However, the stories make up for the lack of quality illustrations. Spooky words such as "apparition" and "exorcist" are included in the glossary. This title will be as popular as Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (HarperCollins, 1981) and Robert San Souci's A Terrifying Taste of Short and Shivery (Delacorte, 1998). Fans of those books will certainly gravitate toward this creepy-but oh such a fun-offering.

Good Used Book

I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter. She had checked it out in her school library but was unable to find it any where else. She was mad that she had to turn it back in before she got the chance to read it all. After trying to find it to buy brand new, I gave up and bought it used. The book had average wear but for the price it was in pretty good shape.

Things that go bump in the night

Who doesn't enjoy a good shiver once in a while? Is anyone such a hardcore skeptic that he or she doesn't enjoy just entertaining the idea, every once in a while, that there might be more to this existence of ours than science can readily, or ever, explain? Every delicious chapter of "The Haunted States of America" draws the reader into a creepy world of apparitions and strange phenomena that may (or may not) exist among us, in places we can easily pinpoint on the map, or maybe even visit. With the shivers and thrills densely packed into an average of two or three pages per chapter, even reluctant readers may find themselves up past their bedtimes, unable to resist the temptation to read just a little bit more.

The engaging style and the variety among different kinds of stories make this book well worth reading, but I would have enjoyed a few more pictures. While the wide scope of the book will appeal to casual readers just looking to enjoy a scary story, those with a more serious interest in history, folklore, or parapsychology may prefer to seek out a work of less breadth and deeper focus.

It's an interesting book in that you get to follow the thought process of a killer. You can watch him lie, lie about his lying, then lie some more. He was clearly a narcissistic with a Madonna-whore complex. And he had a thing for scat play or making people feel disgusted, because he talks about feces A LOT. His main turn-on obviously is not the killing, it's manipulating others to do something specific or feel something specific. This is very clear by the way he talks to Sondra, who at times he seems to worship, only to then degrade her - much like typical abusive partners. I believe this book was a way for him to satisfy that sense of power through manipulation even while behind bars, because he knew without a doubt the overwhelmingly sickened reactions readers would have. I probably would have quit reading if not for the fact that he reminded me so much of an ex boyfriend.

A serial killer recalls his crimes??

Gerard Schaefer hated women. No two ways about it. He was a serial killer housed in Florida State Prison (until being murdered by a fellow criminal some years back)with plenty of time on his hands and plenty of ink in his hate-filled pen. The stories in this book aren't for those easily offended. He revels in tales of death,torture,necrophilia and unrelenting sadism. These stories are unlike anything you'll find anywhere else on the market especailly considering that Schaefer was convicted of crimes along the lines of those he writes about. So, despite his claims to the contrary, the reader is left wondering whether he was speaking from experience or merely making it all up. Somehow I doubt the latter is the case. Highly recommended.

Rarely does my jaw drop...

One of the more twisted things I've read. 'Tis a collection of short stories written by serial killer Gerard Schaefer. Written both before and after his arrest. They are primarily written from the first person point of view, becoming a sort of literary "Henry: portrait of a serial killer". Schaefer is certainly not a great writer, but neither is he terrible and so he effectively pulls you into his mindset. Some people's moral compass may momentarily feel "dizzy" while reading one of his stories. It's rather sickening.
Almost every story details the stalking and strangulation of a woman. And Schafer obsessively details each murder, offering detailed descriptions of EVERY substance that the body emits upon death. Even true crime books usually omit _those_ nauseating details.
In the intro, Colin Wilson says he's never read through the whole book, as it induces a "halitosis of the soul". Well said.

When I purchased this duo, I already owned a paperback copy of A Yuletide Seduction. It is one of my top 20 all time favorite romance books. I reread it often so I decided to get the ebook version. Lo and behold, Amazon had a duo for a very reasonable price. The second book is also a winner. I'm getting ready to read both books again. I also recommend the following books:

Value can be created anywhere.

The lean movement is new, but value creation is as essential to the human experience as consuming or learning. We all do it. Our businesses do it.

However, somewhere along the line, as firms scale, they tend to lose their mojo. The markets shift. Their teams get too big. They stop rewarding failure. And their pace of innovation grinds to a halt.

These organizations need a hand. A book. A handbook. This handbook.

Why? Because it is thoroughly prescriptive.

Bring Lean Startup Principles to Your Company

The Lean Enterprise answers the question, "How can I drive corporate innovation by instilling the lean startup ethos in my organization?" The book answers this question incredibly well by advising executives to set up an innovation colony with the following conditions:
1. physical, financial, & organizational autonomy
2. equity incentives for employees as a trade-off for lower base compensation and the high risk of job loss
3. Access to a large pool of potential projects

At first, I really struggled with the authors' premise on two levels. First, I did not feel that companies would agree to the autonomy conditions. Second, I did not feel that many "regular" employees would agree to the high-risk, high-reward trade-off. However, it eventually dawned on me that the book is geared toward companies that do not want to lose the tiny but extremely valuable set of employees who would otherwise leave to start their own companies. If that keeps you up at night, this book is for you.

I appreciated the case studies sprinkled throughout the book. As far as I could tell, none of the companies individually featured applied ALL of the authors' lessons. However, collectively they did and I think it is reasonable that the authors put a stake in the ground for what the ideal innovation colony looks like.

Beyond that, you get a good survey of:
a. lean startup principles: disruptive ideas, small cross-functional teams, customer development, minimum viable product, rapid experimentation, pivot or persevere decision making based premeditated success criteria, etc.
b. entrepreneurial financing and venture-capital accounting
c. innovation accounting (i.e. focus on metrics that matter)

The book also does a good job of exploring different corporate innovation strategies including: incubating internally; acquiring early; and investing.

Finally, the book does a good job of giving credit to Eric Ries for the principles he popularized in his 2011 book. However, I would have like to have seen credit given to Steve Blank and Bob Dorf who kicked the whole thing off in 2005 with their exceptionally valuable but admittedly textbook like "4 Steps to the Epiphany."

Must read for Chief Innovation Officers

The most comprehensive work on the subject of applying Lean Startup methodology to large corporations to date. It covers a range of practical tactics for lean teams to investment approaches while keeping a consistent overall narrative.

This is not a typical coma inducing business books. It keeps you engaged to the last sentence. It's one of the most enjoyable business books I've read.

In addition to providing a great overview of different approaches, it's packed with the best interviews on the subject so far. The authors don't skimp and include interviews people who disagree with parts of their main innovation colony thesis.

It stays at a fairly high level, best suited to Innovation Officers and C-level execs. If you're a PM, team member, or accelerator manager looking for something about dealing with culture change and how to lead lean teams, you'll have to go back to Jeffrey Liker's The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership.

Overall, Lean Enterprise is a book that all large companies should steal liberally from when considering their strategy for innovation.

A prophet of the most unlikely kind

With this simple phrase on p.15 of my edition of The Peter Principle he explained nearly every problem the human species has faced as we have entered increasingly complex organizations in the development of our civilization,

In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence given enough time and enough levels in the hierarchy

And the more I've thought about it, internalized it, experienced corporate hierarchy... the more I've realized that it explains everything.

A housing bubble caused by artificially low inflation rates? Some blame Greenspan but the reality is that he was just serving above his level of competence. It makes sense. America's colony in Iraq flubbed? Some blame Bush or his subordinates but the reality was that they were serving above their level of competence. We all do from time to time. We all think we are the exception.

As acquaintances enter the work force and through my own witness to the mindset of the low level employee, everyone seems to be focused primarily on ascending to the higher levels. Why? I think it is what we do as a species. It is our fate. I don't mean to dissuade blame from individuals, removing responsibility from personal action. I only intened to explain that we shouldn't expect success, we should expect blindingly stupid failure and then be pleasantly surprised when things aren't flubbed up. That's not being cynical or "realist". It is just recognizing human nature. Incompetence knows no boundaries of time or place.

The Peter Principle when published in 1969 raised a storm because many did not want to accept that they existed at their level of incompetence. Business people didn't take it seriously because it was written tounge-in-cheek with full blown laugh out loud moments. Far different from the bland, dry language they were used to while obtaining their MBAs. I thoroughly enjoyed the book because it is an opportune time for me to examine if I have already achieved my level of incompetence.

While the explanations of the Principle could easily be redundant... (the plot is summarized at the beginning as Dr. Peter states the principle) this book isn't redundant, like a Dilbert cartoon with some acute wisdom. Dr. Peter describes, through various case studies and examples, that every perceived exception to the Principle isn't really an exception at all. Complex hierarchies will see its members achieve the ominous final placement. Someday I too can reach this level.I can get stressed out while making poor decisions. I too can wear the badge of administrative "success": the ulcer.

This might all seem a bit pessimistic. A little defeatist. But not at all. The solution is to focus our species on moving forward instead of upwards. We see our cohorts in groups struggling for status on a, "treadmill to oblivion." But Dr. Peter clearly states that we can rescue ourselves by seeing where this unmindful escalation is leading us. If we focus on the quality of our situation we can achieve previously ignored success without obtaining a literal or figurative promotion.

By applying this principle to our everyday experience, we witness many byproducts. For example, the applied Peter Principle approximates that employees in a hierarchy, "do not truly object to incompetence, they merely gossip about incompetence to mask their envy of employees who have pull." ... with pull being the ability to develop a relationship with someone above you in the hierarchy who can pull you up with them. How poignant. We decry good `ol boy networks but rarely focus on the one thing that could break them up, changing our focus from output to input. I can put in a 40-50 hour work week but would I be more productive if I worked 30-35 hours? We may never know because a full-time job insists that I work 40-50 crushing and life imbalancing hours. Society has focused on input in this situation. Can we think of a better solution to this situation? I'll apply Peter's Bridge to this question: if you can't think of a better solution you have already reached your level of incompetence.

Although the observations made in the Peter Principle are obviously applicable to corporate environments, Laurence Peter made some other candid observations of society in these pages. Such as, exposing our modern caste system on p.64 and p.83 of the 2009 edition:

...we have a class system, it is based not on birth but on the prestige of the university one has attended. The graduate of an obscure college does not have the same opportunity for promotion... but as college degrees become the prerequisite for more jobs, soon everyone will have access to his or her level of incompetence.

...with incompetent handling, the test system is only a disguised form of random placement. The purpose of testing is to place the employee as soon as possible in a job which will utilize the highest competence level on his profile. Obviously, any promotion will be to an area of less competence.

Brilliant stuff that has played out over the last 30+ years just as Dr. Peter predicted.

Good and Classic Explanation of some of the "Whys" of Life

This is a good, classic read on the inevitable rise to incompetency. The author does give you some suggestions to delay or avoid such a promotion. I half enjoyed the names he made up a long the way as tongue and cheek descriptions however; as a fast reader (normally) I found this also slowed me down a bit as well. It's not a big book; if I wanted to, I could have read it in one sitting, but there is so much to absorb and so I found it best to trip over the names, think about the message, chew on it a while and then, absorb it. I do recommend this book as an explanation of why things, especially in dysfunctional companies, are the way they are. I surely could think of examples in each and every stumbling word and name he described.

About the Author
ELINE SNEL is a therapist and certified MBSR trainer and runs the Academy for Mindful Teaching in the Netherlands. She has been developing and teaching mindfulness-based courses for over twenty years and trains teachers to teach MBSR techniques to students. Her program has been used in numerous primary schools in the Netherlands. She has recently started a pilot project in various secondary schools to teach mindfulness practices to teenagers. Wonderful book for parents to help children deal with anxiety, frustration or other issues!

This book was written to help parents with simple exercises that will teach their children a way to clear anxiety and just overthinking. But I loved the idea and bought it for myself. It comes with a CD that nicely guides you through each exercise. The writing is a discussion/explanation for parents, it is not written for children.

Mindfulness or awareness of the present is something I never learned as a child, but how incredibly useful to understand that you can change the way emotional responses control us just through awareness. While it is very individual, techniques of mindfulness can be so helpful and even have long term benefits on health.

I am loving this book so far. I work with children who have severe emotional and behavioral issues, as well as ADHD. I have been using mindfulness exercises all school year and have noticed a great change with the kids. Sitting Still Like A Frog has been a great addition to my reading. The CD included is great as well. We have only listened to a couple of tracks, but the kids enjoy it. The CD is useful for both adults and kids, however the language fits well with the students, it is something they can relate to. This is just one of the practices I use to work with my students, but this book is a great compliment to my practice.

I listened to the tape before introducing it to my class. My children got hung up on the fact that they said stupid twice. It is a word that I tell my children they cannot use, so to hear an adult say it in mindfulness, really upset them.
