This book is a fascinating and original study of the memories of medieval people. In the middle ages, as now, men and women collected stories about the past and handed them down to posterity.

This inherited bank of experience has traditionally been transposed into the accepted narrative of recorded history. It is therefore essential to ask who, exactly, was responsible for the preservation of knowledge about the past? How did people preserve their recollections and pass them on to the next generation? Did they write them down or did they hand them on orally?

Many memories centre on the aristocratic family and lineage while others are focused on institutions such as monasteries or nunneries. The family and monastic contexts clearly illustrate that remembrance of the past was a task for both men and women and that each sex had a specific, gendered role. Memory also involves selection of what should and should not be remembered and its corollary, amnesia, therefore requires scrutiny.

Elisabeth van Houts is Honorary Professor of European Medieval History, University of Cambridge, and Fellow of Emmanuel College.

Elizabeth van Houts is Lecturer in Medieval History at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of History, University of Cambridge. She has published extensively on Anglo-Norman history and the history of gender in the Middle Ages. Her recent publications include Exile in the Middle Ages (2004), with Laura Napran, and Medieval Writings on Lay Women in the Middle Ages (2011), with Patricia Skinner.

A No-Brainer for Intermediate Cellists

I choose this book because I am a low-intermediate cellist moving up from Suzuki Book 3.

I had avoided Suzuki books in the past because I wanted to customize my own repertoire, but now I have come to love Suzuki. The books contain an intuitive selection of works that help the student progress in difficulty. Additionally, the pieces sound great on the cello. Book is mostly bass clef, with some tenor clef etudes/practice at end of book.

I especially appreciate the suggested fingering, which saves me HOURS of trying to figure it out on my own.

I would recommend this book to any low-intermediate cellist.

The Suzuki companion CD for books 3/4 also complements this book.

I've been working my way through the series, but found myself liking these selections less. There are only four songs and the rest are etudes and practice pieces.
A bit of a let down after vol 2 and 3.

So amazing;y life like. I don't know if Allyson gets her ideas from real life experiences or if she is just that amazing at story telling, but I do know this story is too good to not read. Being someone who has dealt with crappy divorce and child custody B.S. its amazing reading how well all of this has been captured and worked into the story line. I love it and I am finding each book in this series progressively harder to put down to do things I need to in real life lol.

I fell in love with the characters. I was able to read this in an afternoon but it was good. Just enough frisky to match the sweet. Best part no cliffhangers!

FUN, ENTERTAINING READ...

Very good story. Their meeting was a little bit hard to believe but then in today's world, who knows? After they first met and then things start to happen the story gets really good. What starts out as a fake engagement gets really involved. I really liked this story. Both the hero and heroine were very easy to like. Both very strong personalities and they each had a backbone. A divorced father is fighting to keep his daughter in his life. A single woman making it on her own is fighting to keep her legal inheritance. They agree to help out the other and wind up getting themselves in deeper than they thought possible.

The chemistry between these two is off the charts. The 10 year old daughter is cute and charming and you really want her to be with her father full-time. But the law and a lot of other stuff gets in the way. But they all do get a happy ending and it is a very entertaining read.

SPOILER --- I sincerely hope that the brother didn't get all he was intending to get. It was not clear to me that she didn't just give in to him. NO WAY was that a good thing. did the "bad" lawyer ever get it??? He should have been brought down and NO FEES paid!!! I really like to see the bad guys get it in spades and it didn't seem as though they did. Also, the ex-wife did lose in some ways but she really should have lost a lot more. she was a menace and no 10 year old child should be left alone for any reason at any time. BAD MOTHER!!!

I definitely recommend the book and it was very entertaining.
