Love the Laws of Love

There is something about the books coming out of Prentiss Productions. Each book I read seems to evoke growth, awareness, and happiness. To create and maintain this type of perspective to share with the world is a true gift. I am an avid reader, but few writers elevate my consciousness and level of overall happiness. Each book provides life lessons ripe for adoption and bring a combination of joy and awe into my life. I found the passage Chris shared with his wife to be incredible. I sat down and wrote a letter to the love of my life about the love we will share. The book provided insight into what it takes to keep love alive. Thank you for sharing and providing assistance on my personal journey to forgive and appreciate the Dealbreakers of the past (mine and theirs). Thank you.

A Disappointment After His Other Books

I find Zen and the Art of Happiness, Chris Prentiss's earlier book, so helpful that I take it with me on trips to keep me centered. I have learned a tremendous amount from Be Who You Want, Have What You Want. I bought The Laws of Love thinking it wouldn't be too different from his earlier works, but be at least as good. Unfortunately, it's not. The first weakness is organization. Prentiss's emphasis, as always, is on becoming the kind of person who is happy, ethical, and loving. You therefore will draw into your life the love you want, because you know how to give it. It would have been useful, then, if Prentiss had grouped the laws about being and becoming a happy, ethical, loving person earlier, before ones having to do with a relationship you're already in. Unfortunately, the arrangement in the book is haphazard, and weakens the points Prentiss makes.

The second problem has to do with Prentiss's conviction that, in order for a love relationship to succeed fully, it must be the most important thing in your life. Making your lover happy must be your first priority. If something else--a job, a hobby--is not compatible with your relationship, it must go. If you get a wonderful job offer and your spouse doesn't want the move it will entail (the example Prentiss uses),you must refuse the job, Surely, there are some circumstances under which the right thing to do is to refuse the offer. But there's more--much, much more--to be said about how to discuss this, about how to weigh what's important to each of you, about how to decide whether there are ways for each of you to have what truly matters to you, than Prentiss says. He does say that he's not advocating putting up with whatever your true love wants, or giving in to all demands, but he has almost nothing to say that is clarifying about which demands you rush to fulfill, and which you resist or negotiate. Since keeping your significant other happy is a big part of what he's advocating, more detail here is crucial, and he doesn't provide it.

I'm sorry, but this was a disappointing book from a man who has a lot of wisdom to share, but who didn't manage to do it very well here.

About the Author
Cao Xueqin (1715-63) was born into a family which for three generations held the office of Commissioner of Imperial Textiles in Nanking, a family so wealthy they were able to entertain the Emperor four times. However, calamity overtook them and their property was consfiscated. Cao Xueqin was living in poverty when he wrote his famous novel The Story of the Stone.

Good Attempt on Translating difficult Chinese

I have just finished reading the Chinese Version of the story (which I would rate as 5 stars), and thought, although the English Version is pretty accurate, it somehow lacks the fluency the story should have. Because of the difficulty for foreign people to imagine the situation, readers are not involved in the story as much and is therefore less effective than some books like the Wild Swan. The translation has definitely lost some tastes from the Chinese version. However if you are a foreigner who wants to explore Chinese culture, or a person who does not understand written Chinese very well (like me), this is still the book to read,for this is a book that can endure repeated reading such that one can inevitably find more and more traces of Cao Xueqin's ingenuity.

Warning voices to presage the decadence of the Jia

Volume 3 finds the significant idea in Buddhist that one would open his eyes to the vanity of human affections and causes a person to renounce the world, for one no longer subscribes to the conventions of the mundane, dust-stained world and thrives to be detached from it.

The title of this gripping, escalating volume, The Warning Voice, duly confirms the intractable decadence of the Jias. Tolstoy's opening line in Anna Karenina best describes the unfavorable miasma - "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Outsiders look at the Jias and all its wealth and immediately think how happy the Jias must be, they don't realize the vexations far outweigh the advantages and privileges. Being a big family with its numerous maids' converting to mistresses and concubines, daily fuss and drama are inevitable. Some of the most memorable scenes of THE DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER are indubitably those that concern Jia Lian's secret second marriage and its aftermath. The cunning Xi-feng deliberately conceals her knowledge of the shameful matter and executes her plan silently. Keeping her anger at bay and taking advantage of her rival's lacking in guile, Xi-feng entreats her rival to live with her, feigns kindness and makes her rival feel reassured about her future in the bosom of so delightful a family. Xi-feng's forbearance and outward gesture of kindness greatly mystify everyone who knows about the matter but little does anyone know about her true intent to rid of this new mistress. The treacherous Xi-feng surreptitiously draws up a fictitious court case accusing her own husband of taking an unlawful wife during national mourning and family mourning in order to rid of her rival indirectly. Her strategy is to stir up a betrothal agreement concerning her rival in the old days and manipulates the formerly affianced to bring a written indictment against her own husband before the court.

Insubordination and deterioration of moral standard infest the garden and infuriate Lady Wang. In her opinion each one of the maids in the garden is potential corrupter of her son Bao-yu. She orders a raid of the garden at the awestruck finding of a lewd picture. It can be inferred that in his ineffable pain of losing Dai-yu that he has conceived the incipient thought to break away from the dust-stained world. Buddhist teaching dictates the second half of this climax-reaching volume of the novel. At the depletion of wealth and the dimming of glitter the truth of Buddha outshines the taste of luxury that is proven to be vanity at best. Out of the sea of suffering, one might turn the light and resolve to abjure the world and its vanities in order to prepare for the life to come. This is wonderful Chinese Literarure

I have now read all three volumes of the David Hawkes' translation of 'The Dream of the Red Chamber' and I am simply blown away by the sheer volume of the text, and how there is never a dull moment. Not only is it a beautiful love story, but it is also a semi autobiographical account of the rise and fall of Cao Wue-Qin's family. I love modern Chinese writers like Mo Yan and Yu Hua, but I must say this novel is a must read for anyone wishing to understand Chinese Literature. My wife is Chinese and she knows this work from her days in school, and she said that it must have been very hard to translate the old Chinese into Modern English, but I would say that Mr. Hawkes' version is true and as close as one can get to an excellent translation of an enormous tome. I would just stick to these 3 volumes with the 80 chapters - and enjoy. This is truly a great piece of world literature that should be read.

Not on the same level as Far Pavilions

As a huge fan of Far Pavilions and to a lesser degree, Shadow of the Moon, I looked forward to reading an M.M Kaye novel I had not previously encountered. However, the quality is not the same. The plot is certainly intriguing, but the heroine, ironically named Hero, is not developed enough to engage either sympathy or support. Truthfully, Hero is just plain annoying. Given the predictable plot, and characters who don't excite the reader, it's hard to stay engaged in the book. For me, it was a disapppointment

Good but a bit outdated now (4th edition)...

With the new 4th edition, Messmer touches on most of the changes ( more details on the pentium III and it's chipset, rambus, DVDs, PCI bus etc.) that have occured in the PC world since the 3rd edition(1997). However, the updated sections are frankly a bit skimpy.
The heart of the book still remains a highly detailed description of the core x86 architecture, which is invaluable.
Mueller has retained all of this material since he probably exerted a great deal of effort in writing them for the 1st edition. However, the newer material, which is equally important, lacks the same kind of depth. So the "Indispensible PC hardware book" is no longer enough on it's own. Something like Scott Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" is needed to complement Messmer's otherwise excellent book.

"The One Book", for me at least, on PC Hardware

I have not been using this book so much recently, but in the past it has been absolutely invaluable. Definately the best single reference for technical specifics for the PC.
There seem to be dozens if not hundreds of "upgrade your PC", "Fix your PC" and so on - nearly all light weight and I consider not worthwhile.
It has tables on pretty well everything, and the information is quite dense. I have not found it to be inaccurate. Not merely factual tables (Addresses, IRQs, layouts of structure, PCI) it contains good descriptions of of what is going on.
Now in its fourth edition - and I think I have owned all of them, it has stood the test of time and continues to be updated.
