THE BOOK IS A STEAL AT THIS PRICE

It took me about less than a day to read this book. The book beautifully addresses the public speaking pain points. The writer has an empathetic style of writing, and while reading I could relate with most of his examples, like "You might have the self confidence to speak before your close friends, argue confidently with your dad, bombard your mom with intelligent arguments, you might get weak knees when you face an audience. " I was exactly facing the same issue, but after reading this book I know where was I lacking. I would have loved if the author would have written more elaborately on some of the topics, but I think that's being over greedy of me... author's objective was not to have a lengthy book.

The author has a very systematic and logical approach of writing, the book not just talks about understanding the audience, their knowledge level, but also coaches you on how good content makes you give a talk with substance clarity and confidence.

I believe, the book is unique in public speaking category. Unlike other books, it does not talk about the cliched stuff like rehearsal, revision and eye contact, I was fed up of those. This book is a practical guide- just like a Boot Camp- this book will empower you step by step, and will help you to be the best version of speaker that you can be. It realizes that speaking is more about communicating, than impressing.

Whether you are a professional who wants to enthrall your colleagues, or an individual just wishing to be good at communicating with others, I would strongly recommend this book. You can buy it for your children too!

SMALL SIZE, BIG PUNCH!!

Bought this book and read it in half a day. Must admit that the short length(under 60 pages) is what attracted me first. I was more like "It's low cost and low size. What's there to lose?"

But must admit, the book packs a punch! Enough to inspire me to write a book review for the first time!

The best part is that the author tells you upfront that his aim is not to make you into the next Obama or Churchill. I realized that this quest for perfection is in fact one of the biggest factors we never try!

He then goes on to talk about stage fear, how it is an emotional challenge, not a skill challenge. He drills down the fact that without good substance, even the best delivery techniques cannot work(But most other books still focus on delivery rather than content!!) He then provides step by step methods to come up with great content in 4 weeks on a topic which you have no clue about.

The best part was the 'explanation techniques' he has provided once you have the content ready. They are not only extremely practical, but extremely empathetic. Helps you really connect with your audience, even though you might not have the best language or vocabulary skills.

He rightly says that good public speaking is not impresing with style, but connecting with substance. And he teaches you exactly how to do that!!

The author is a TEDx speaker!

RARE GEM!

Rarely do you get luck to come across such less known books which help you a lot. I had never heard of the author before or his book before. Ended up buying it because the part about "you do not need to speak like Obama" resonated with me. I had always felt the books out there are too idealistic. Plus the price and length was small(I am not much of a reader!! :) )

But the book turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The examples connected with me a lot. He really gets to the root of stage fear and what public speaking is really about. More like a public speaking plus psychology book packed into a small package!!! Googled him and came across his TEDx talk.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4QrH0fun4E) No wonder he brings in deep understanding not just instructional stuff.

About the Author
BO Myint Win is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer in Bullen Consultants Ltd, United Kingdom. He obtained his B.Sc (Geology) from the University of Rangoon and received a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrogeology from University College London and M.Sc. degree from the University of London. He obtained his Ph.D in Civil Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr. Bo is a Fellow of the Geological Society, London, Chartered Geologist and also a European Geologist. He has published over 60 papers in international conferences and journals. He has been working as consultant for several reclamation and soil improvement projects in Singapore and the Far East.

Dr. CHU Jian is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales, Australia. He has 19 years of research and consulting experiences in geotechnical engineering, particularly in the areas of laboratory and in-situ testing, engineering properties of soils, soil improvement and land reclamation. Dr. LOW Bak Kong is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. His research and teaching interest include slope stability, soil improvement and geotechnical reliability analysis. He has published papers on these topics in international journals and conferences.

Victor Choa is currently Professor and Dean of Admissions at the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Cambridge, M.Sc. from the University of Birmingham and Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore. Professor Choa has been active in teaching, research and consulting in the field of geotechnical engineering in general and land reclamation and soil improvement in particular. He has been engaged as a consultant in many international civil engineering projects and has authored over 100 technical papers in geotechnical engineering.

Great scholars are usually poor preachers, and great scholars are rarely good preachers, but Thielicke manages to combine distinguished scholarship with fine preaching.

About the Author
Helmut Thielicke is one of the most outstanding preachers and theologians of the German Lutheran Church. Dismissed by the Nazi regime from his post of Professor of Theology at Heidelberg in 1940, he came to prominence in Stuttgart where, during the worst of the bombing raids and in spite of continuing Nazi opposition, he continued to preach to a congregation of several thousand each week. After the war he served as professor and Rector at the University of Tubingen until 1954, when he accepted the post of Rector at the University of Hamburg, the first Protestant theologian to hold this position. He died in 1986.

Max Lucado he is not...

Just a caution: if you like Lucado, you may appreciate Thielicke, but you'll have entered a whole different world where the heart is searched with a searing spotlight and the deep secrets of our hypocrisy and sin are exposed through the parables of Jesus as Thielicke leads us to repentance. Lucado and Thielicke are completely different. Here's a typical excerpt from Thielicke, on the parable in Luke 18:9-14:

"Many of us are less like the Pharisee, with his uplifted head and his solid moral character, than we are like the publican--but a somewhat different publican from the one described in the parable. Perhaps like a publican who says, "I thank Thee, God, that I am not so proud as this Pharisee; I am an extortioner, unjust, and an adulterer. That's the way human beings are, and that's what I am, but at least I admit it, and therefore I am a little bit better than the rest of the breed. I commit fornication twice a week, and at most ten percent of what I own comes from honest work. I am an honest man, O God, because I don't kid myself, I don't have any illusions about myself. Let your angels sing a hallelujah over this one sinner who is as honest as I am, honest enough to admit that he is a dirty dog and not hide it beneath his robes like these lying Philistines the Pharisees.'"

Outstanding book of sermons on the parables of Jesus

This book is outstanding. Thielicke's sermons place the reader in the middle of the meaning of the parables and of life's journey. Thielicke was a pastor during World War II, and his sermons reflect the depth of his rich experience of what it means to be human and loved by God. If you enjoy Max Lucado, you will enjoy and be blessed by Thielicke.

Peter Egan is one of the most readable writers in the motorcycle enthusiast world. His work first appeared in Cycle World magazine in 1977, and he has been a regular fixture there ever since. Preaching To The Choir

I didn't see it coming when it popped up on my screen, Leanings 3 is coming. Manna from heaven, at last. I suspect you are already addicted to Peter's fixes on 2, 4, or even 3-wheelers. Leanings 3 does not disappoint, no need for citations here, merely to affirm that Peter knows what his readership hungers for and he shoved out tubfuls of it. Having read his body of works, Peter's formula of self deprivation (or is it self degradation in his case), and social irreverence is something many of us can identify with. Intended or not, I have always detect veiled undertone messages within his words. They are social commentaries of varied observations with cerebrally deep fried scenes, waking us to either conscious or unconscious self examinations of common follies, all delivered via our wheels of choice. 2 centuries from now, for a doctorate's research of American society in the latter 20th century, Peter's works would serve. For sure nothing new in Leaning 3, within are re-runs of prior CW pieces. But then I return to Sarah Brightman's voice, my favorite Mexican dive, Negra Modelo draft, my shredded jean and dark sweater, and Peter's articles. Motorbooks has done us all a favor with Leaning 3 with its publication, save me the trouble of digging through buried boxes of assorted magazines for re-reads. I am starting a new tradition of reading Pter's works once every ten years, they are that good. Peter has become our cult leader with sizable followers, as if he is not already awared.

More excellent stories from the king of motorcycle journalism.

I am a regular reader of Peter Egans columns but I find having the collected columns together like this better. Instead of many small nibbles I can immerse myself completely for a few hours and feel myself with Peter cruising the Wisconsin roads on a variety of interesting machines, sunshine on my back, wind in my face. He is truly the Bill Bryson of motorcycle writing. May there be many more books and articles.

I read his monthly comments in Cycle World and all of his moto reviews and this book is the best of the best.
The down to earth style is comfortable to read and always makes me smile.

A composer, concert pianist, film actor and radio and TV personality, Levant (1906-1972) was best known for his musical virtuosity and caustic wit. His idiosyncratic character is brought to life in this objective and entertaining biography by Schoenberger and Kashner, who are married and teach creative writing at William and Mary College in Virginia. Levant was a close friend to composer George Gershwin, and neglected his own compositions in favor of performing Gershwin's music. (After Gershwin's death in 1937, Levant appeared in Rhapsody in Blue , the Hollywood version of Gershwin's life.) His other film apearances included parts in Humoresque (1947) and An American in Paris (1951), in both of which he honed a persona as a neurotic and cynical musician. Drawing on interviews and letters, Kashner and Schoenberger carefully document Levant's emotional problems, which eventually led to a drug addiction that prevented him from performing and nearly ended his marriage to actress June Gale. For many years Levant was a very visible celebrity who appeared regularly on television variety shows, acted in films (playing himself at least as often as he was cast as a fictional character), and traveled the country as a concert pianist. He was also known for his quick wit, acerbic tongue, and neurotic disposition, showcased on venues such as Jack Paar's talk show, and made manifest in the three books he wrote. Kashner and Schoenberger painstakingly define the demons that stalked Levant throughout his life, creating a wonderfully illuminating portrait of this decidedly complex man. A chain-smoking hypochondriac, with a serious addiction to drugs, Levant was also an abusive husband, though he continued to be loved by his wife, June. extremely entertaining read on a fascinating man

'A Talent For Genius' is the exhaustive biography of one of the most colorful characters of American culture of the 30's and 40's: Oscar Levant.
In some ways, Levant's life proves to be even more interesting biography material than that of his good friend, the legendary George Gershwin. Perhaps this is because he lived for so much longer. Probably it is because of Levant's numerous talents other than music.
Because Levant was so social and knew so many of the luminaries of the arts of his time, this book pulls in a nice glimpse of the New York arts scene, MGM's Hollywood in the 40's & 50's, the U.S. classical music scene, and growing up Jewish in New York in the 20's.
Last but not least, Levant was a notorious wit; he was so funny that he could afford to be obnoxious and insulting and still count on being a welcome guest in the homes of his many friends. This biography captures such wit, and is entertainingly written (with tongue firmly in cheek) in its own right.
I am among those who prefer to not focus on Levant's later addiction to prescription drugs; such a living hell would seem to be too much a sad and undeserving fate for one of America's great entertainers and quirky geniuses. Here too, the subject matter is handled sensitively but unflinchingly.
The authors of this book have done a womderful job in fully depicting a very deserving and overdue subject: the life of Oscar Levant.

A Very Thorough and Touching Biography
By The Reluctant Critic
I first developed an interest in Oscar Levant after reading about him in "Harpo Speaks". Since that time, I've read all of his three books, have listened to two of his albums, followed by the reading of this book.
This book is one of the best biographies I have ever read. It reveals the good, bad, and the ugly of Levant's character. The authors spend a little too much ink playing the role of psychoanalyst, but most of what they offer seems to make sense regarding Levant's wild behaviors.
Overall, this is a fascinating book. Levant was a true original, and this book does an excellent job of filling in the empty spaces of Levant's autobiographies.

If you want to write an interesting biography write it about an interesting person

In the opening chapter of this book the authors describe the home from which Levant came, and his Pittsburg childhood. On his mother's side they were both a very musical family, and one which had 'sarcasm and humor ' as an unending part of their talking with each other. The roots of Levant's later work are clearly in this childhood, and his specially close connection with his mother's family. Also the lively Pittsburgh world of the time, including the Colwell Street brothel and the teeming immigrant-filled streets were an essential part of the education of this very street- wise classical musician.

Levant's life involved a number of very great successes. He was a composer of more than talent, and of course arguably the best interpreter of his friend Gershwin's music.

He could be quite nasty , and a louse but it seems that many were willing to forgive him , perhaps because they appreciated his great difficulties in life. One of his famous sayings is something like, " They threw me out of the insane asylum because I was making everyone there depressed"

Levant had a career not only as classical pianist and composer, but also as TV talk- show host, and much later towards the end ' guest' on the Jack Paar show. He worked with the great musicians of his time. After a short first marriage he had a thirty - five year marriage to the singer June Gale. The couple had three children.

What is to say finally about a man who had so much talent, did so many things, but also suffered so much and was not particularly loveable many times?

About the Author
Jeannie Fulbright is a mother of four who shares with her readers a love for Gods Word, family, homeschooling, and science. She began speaking and writing in college as a sportscaster for the University of Texas and as a headline writer with the Daily Texan. Soon after her family set out on their homeschool journey, Jeannie recognized an immense need for scientifically sound creation-based curriculum that would be both engaging for kids and easy for parents to use. Her background in science at the University of Texas inspired her to create the Apologia elementary science courses.

Incredible Science Resource

We love this book. I am using it with my 5 children ranging in ages 8-11 (with a 3 year old along for the ride). Reasons I love it:

1. Captivating- The lessons are communicated in a way that is interesting enough to keep attention and aid in memory retention-thorough education (and more) of anatomy and physiology without being dry.
2. Activities- simple and easy to throw together at the last minute. I usually just look over what I plan on covering for the next 2 weeks to make sure I have supplies and do last minute prep right before teaching.
3. I am able to easily make this work for our variety of age ranges/styles- They all have the notebooks that accompany this book and it took me a while to figure this out- but I just assign something simple for each of them to do before/after or during the reading.
4. Christian apologetic perspective. I hear a lot of arguments against Christianity. It's so nice to have an intelligent fun curriculum that helps the children defend their faith. I debated in college. This stuff rocks.

Highly recommend- what I would change/add? Something that is not necessary but has been helpful is for me to read through the part we will be reading for the day and to have some kind of simple introductory activity or question or thought to get us started- it seems to help in making the lessons seem more complete. Also, There is not a lot of instruction for the accompanying notebooks for the children to write in/complete. But, it's flexibility in what you can do with it is helpful as well. The notebook has a lot of great activities.

Great Science Curriculum

I homeschool 4 children and this program is great! It engages the students and has lots of experiments throughout the lessons to help them apply what they have learned. It also doesn't hesitate to point out God's role in it all, including Bible verses. I absolutely love this program. This book is the main textbook.

Apologia Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy

We have used Apologia Science textbooks forever. I decided to try the Human Anatomy Book. I overheard my 16 year old son talking to my 8 year old son...they were discussing Anatomy. My 16 year old had been reading it to his brother (on their own!). To me, that is the best recommendation. We love it!
