About the Author
Dr. Patricia Thompson is an award-winning teacher, researcher, and corporate psychologist who has consulted to senior executives since 2004. On the way to earning her PhD in Clinical Psychology, she was educated at the University of Toronto, Georgia State University, The University of Pennsylvania, and the Emory School of Medicine. She currently teaches corporations and individuals how to leverage the science of positive psychology to enhance their personal and professional results, believing that a holistic approach that addresses one’s body, mind, and spirit is the key to achieving peak performance in a variety of domains. She lives in Atlanta, GA, with her husband, Markeal, and son, Blake.

A brilliant explanation of how to accelerate your personal growth and professional development and then help others to do so

The last time I checked, Amazon US offers 113,746 books for sale in the general category of "leadership" and 45,153 books in the "business leadership" category. Why another? Albert Einstein provided the best answer years ago when chided by a Princeton colleague that he always asked the same questions on his final examinations. "Quite true. Each year, the answers are different."
What Patricia Thompson offers in her book is a cohesive, comprehensive, and resource-effective program by which to achieve two critically important strategic objectives, whatever the size and nature of the given organization may be: helping aspiring leaders to accelerate their personal growth and professional development, and, to prepare those leaders to help others to do so, including but by no means limited to their direct reports.
What is a consummate leader? Its etymology dates to the classic Latin word, "consummatus," meaning "perfected, complete." Back to Einstein's observation, for a moment: The nature and extent of consummate leadership in ancient Greece or Rome are quite different from what they have become since Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th president of the United States. So, in Thompson's opinion, what are the defining characteristics of a consummate leader today? She suggests seven:
o Self-Awareness
o Spirituality
o Self-Management
o Positivity
o Authenticity
o Effective Relationship Building
o Skillful Coaching and Developing
All of these are essential to what I characterize as "leadership for all seasons." Throughout history, all great leaders can be viewed as "gardeners" with a "green thumb" who "grew" other people. This perspective is also compatible with Thompson's covey of characteristics. She devotes a separate chapter to each. I should add, all that she says is wholly consistent with "perfected, complete" but as she would be the first to point out, those two terms are the destination of a never-ending process of development. The men and women almost universally regarded as consummate leaders (from Elizabeth I and Catherine the Great to Winston Churchill and Mohandas Gandhi) were seriously flawed human beings. To cherish them is not to deify them.
No brief commentary such as mine can possibly do full justice to the abundance of information, insights, and counsel that Patricia Thompson provides but I hope that I have at least indicated why I think so highly of this book. I strongly recommend it, especially to those now preparing for a career in business or who have only recently embarked on one and who aspire to become a leader. Also, to middle managers who need her help to understand and appreciate the fact that all organizations must have effective (consummate) leadership, not only in the C-Suite but at all levels and in all areas throughout the given enterprise.

Leader Within

Often when we think we are at our lowest we are able to do great things anyway. According to author Patricia Thompson, this book The Consummate Leader began during a time when she was a bit lost. She had a messy break up, trying to find a path to her dreams, and working at being comfortable in her chosen profession. A plateful of problems to most folks, but Thompson doubled down and wrote this book.
This book has something for everyone. At the end there is a nice exercise where the reader can ask some pertinent tough questions about themselves. The book is also sprinkled with gems of wisdom and exercises.
What I got out of the book is that becoming or being a leader is a constant “work in progress”. Yes, you may have the inclination to take the lead but to do it well you need to take a 360 approach.
The book has real life case studies and examples of what works. This book is ideal for those starting out in their careers or those that just need a reboot 2.0 to reenergize the inner leader within.

Not just for managers and CEO's

If everyone followed the suggestions for self-development outlined in this book, it would change the world for the better. Parents, teachers--anyone who relates to anybody else, in any context can benefit from the exercises and suggestions Dr. Thompson mentions.
The skeptical are met with empirical evidence, served up in Thompson's down-to-earth, often humorous style. She also offers case studies and stories drawn from her own life. In other words, she demonstrates that she not only talks the talk, but has walked the walk, and continues to do so.
The Consummate Leader is a wise investment. I'll give one to my graduating senior next year, and I'd suggest that others do the same. These lessons can't be learned too early!
