Lots of Ideas / Not Her Ideas/ Not For Beginners Limited on Money or Space/ Not All Natural Ingredients

I bought this book for natural soap recipes- and I agree with a few other reviews, not all the ingredients used are natural. I was hoping for some recipes with exotic cold pressed oils, but the recipes use common oils and butters, some good, some not good at all. Pros: the photos are great and so is the spiral bound design. Some of the recipes are simple. Some of the ingredients used are common and easy to find. Some of the recipes look really fun!
Cons: I recognized a great many of the designs from the Amy Warden Soap Challenge and the original artisan soap makers were not given credit (design ideas are not exclusive to the Soap Queen). You're gonna have to spend a WHOLE lot of money buying the molds she uses for the recipes and the equipment. Instead of telling you how many ounces a recipe makes- you get how many bars based on her molds (a pain in the butt for a newbie to figure out using your own molds.) More than half the book is for advanced soap makers. Some recipes call for food items like potato or cucumber or banana- however there are powdered extracts that would be much safer to use IF you were selling these soaps (as far as I know the FDA does not approve raw food in soaps). The book is a copycat of other artisans original works and really instead of using ordinary easy to find molds it compels you to go to her company to buy the equipment (or buy it cheaper here on Amazon :) SOME THINGS YOU NEED:You need a silicone log mold, a wooden slab mold, a individual silicone cavity mold, a silicone slab mold (smaller), and a long log mold with dividers, and round molds, embellishment molds, natural colorants, oxides, tons of essential oils, heating pad, section tools, sodium lactate (in all the recipes), cupcake mold, stamp, rubber mallet, sealable tea bags, herbs, bubble wrap, cookie cutters, powder sifter, chopsticks, frosting bag and tip... it goes on and on. This is not for the beginning soap maker that has limited funds and space (some recipes require the freezer over night). The simplest recipes are the Olive Oil Brine, and Oatmeal Soap for Babies. I give it three stars for the photos, layout, time and effort, the attempt of making it somewhat NATURAL SOAPMAKING, and the spiral binder, and because she used other artisans designs and not her own (even though she doesn't credit them).

Great book! Loved every page!

Loved this book so much that I purchased a second copy for my soaping sister. it is a beautiful book that is well write with a great layout. I read this book from cover to cover. I am an experienced Soapmaker who found it to be quite inspirational. I may try some of her design ideas; at the very least I will use the book for new ideas.

I have seen some complain as to what is natural or not. Anyone can argue as to whether this book uses "natural" ingredients or not. In the United States there is no legal definition for "natural ingredients ". If you don't like a particular ingredient, don't use it.

Not for beginners. Too many ingredients.

I was disappointed in this book. It has a lot of good information, but the author is obviously trying to sell more of her products from her brambleberry.com website. There are way too many ingredients in each recipe. I can't blame her for creating a book in order to support her website. The "Everything Soapmaking " book by Alicia Grosso is so much better. Much simpler recipes that don't break your pocket book. I've been using it for quite a few years and I still use it.

Good Start

I don't know where I got this but it just showed up in the mail one day. It is a great, but short, guide to the insurance industry. As an agent for Farmers Insurance I already knew 95% of the material, but it would be a great book for someone new to the industry. It wont teach you to sell, adjust, or underwrite, but it will help you understand key terms and concepts very well. If you want to break into the industry it would be a good read so that you don't look ignorant in a job interview.

An excellent book to read for those with a limited knowledge of how insurance works.

An easy read, but it is more for those individuals who have a background in insurancel. Since I have both an intreest professionally and personally in the field, it is a well written publication. It is purely made for those with a limited background or those new to the insurance industry. I would say it is one of the best basic introductory to insurancce books I have ever read.

Another Version of Fifty Shades of Grey - Sexually Inexperienced Woman Has Relationship with Dominant Billionaire

Emily is a young woman who leaves her small town to make a better life for herself. While she is desperately looking for a job, she runs into Cooper. He is a 32-year-old billionaire who wants Emily in his life as soon as he lays eyes on her. Shortly after they meet, Cooper asks her to be his girlfriend and engage in BDSM as a submissive. Emily quickly falls in love with Cooper as she becomes utterly consumed by him and every aspect of his life.

If you want to read a story that has a similar premise to Fifty Shades of Grey, then I would recommend this book. Emily and Cooper feel like they are soulmates and destined to be together even though they've only known each other for a day. This relationship should be filled with internal conflict considering the personalities of these characters, the short amount of time they've spent together, and the complicated sexual dynamic that exists between them. But none of that inner turmoil exists. The only obstacle they must overcome is a villain who is represented as Cooper's ex-wife. She is blackmailing Cooper over an issue that could potentially jeopardize his business.

I wish I could have found out why these characters cared so much about each other. Their feelings weren't based on anything substantive. They were quickly declaring an undying love for each other, but it came across as trivial and shallow. This story had the potential to be a lot more suspenseful and riveting if there was more character development and drama.

Where do I start

Let me first start by saying I only made it to the 20% mark. That being said I spent more time correcting grammatical errors in my head then getting into the story there was no character building in the beginning so while the main characters are " in a relationship" idk who they are or why they crossed path. But maybe she got to that later. Sex was dry and forced and the main female wasn't doing it for me, way to damsel in distress. I feel like I wasted a kindle unlimited pick. ( I'm sure someone liked it just not me. Sorry not sorry )

Life changing...a must read!

I grew up with very low self esteem, and it has affected my adult life in a very negative way, ie...settling for less than what I want, relationships ending, no self respect, etc.
I bought this book about a month ago, and the impact on my way of thinking and behaving is awesome! I know I will always have to fight my bad habits from the past, but this book has given me the tools to change my life!

About the Author
Nancy Reisman's debut novel, The First Desire, was a New York Times Notable Book and a recipient of the Goldberg Award from the Foundation for Jewish Culture. Her story collection, House Fires, won the Iowa Award for Short Fiction. Her short fiction has appeared in many journals and anthologies, including Tin House, Glimmer Train, the Yale Review, SubTropics, Michigan Quarterly Review, Kenyon Review, Five Points, Narrative, The Best American Short Stories (2001), and The O'Henry Award Stories (2005). Reisman has received fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Tennessee Commission on the Arts, the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. She teaches at Vanderbilt University and lives in Nashville, TN.

Potentially moving story is not so.

Reisman is a clean, precise writer who kept me turning the page in the hope that her characters, who I got to know well, would grow in depth and self knowledge; never happened. This story skated on top of the ice of life the whole way through - very disappointing for such well articulated and described individuals and situations.

A intriguing story, "told" by the author, not the characters.

I read the glowing review in the Sunday New York Times Book Review June 28th, 2015. I liked the title.wanted to get involved in the lives of these characters, in the family, what happens to them, the story. I looked forward to finding myself pulled inside the the characters' lives through the point of view of the protagonist(s). . Alas, Nancy Reisman "tells" the story herself. I'd have loved if one of the main character's voice "showed" me the story through her or his eyes, his or her senses, feelings, thoughts, dialog, . I thought that the publisher, Tin House ,would have published a more intimate writing style rather than keeping me, the reader, at a distance with dated omniscient point of view. The writing is lovely "telling." The story is there, but didn't take me on the promised journey. I put the book down and walked away, disappointed.

Exquisite. Life as a series of transitions, an illusion that never stands still

Trompe L’Oeil (i.e., Optical Illusion), by Nancy Reisman, is an exquisite emotional and literary portrait of a family. The plot follows the lives of the Murphy family over the course of approximately thirty-five years. There’s James, the father; Nora, the mother; Theo, the oldest child and only son; Katy, the second child; Molly, the child who was killed in a pedestrian accident when she was four years old; and eventually, Sara and Dalia, two daughters born in quick succession after Molly’s death. The Murphys are an affluent, educated, and artistic New England family with ties to Boston, Cambridge, Wellesley, and Cape Cod. By all intents and purposes, they’re an ordinary privileged family made unique by having been forced to weather the extraordinary crisis of a child’s death.

At the beginning of the book, seemingly at the peak of the family’s happiness and vigor, Molly is tragically run over and killed by a truck while dashing across a street in Rome during a family vacation. She was only four years old. In an instant, the illusion of the family’s perfect life and expected future vanishes. Can one event change everything? Can one tragic event propel every individual in the family—both existing and not yet born—on to another trajectory? Can it keep affecting each life repeatedly and endlessly into the future?

If you read this elegant and sublime novel, you’ll come away answering, “Why, yes, of course!” The novel will help you understand and experience all the subtle ways that this can be true.

If there is a purpose or theme to this novel, it seems to be a demonstration that we are all in a state of perpetual transition; that life is an illusion that never stands still; that the “world as one knows it is only the world of a moment.”

This novel is told in the past tense by an anonymous narrator. At first, I thought the narrator was the author and that I would be reading a typical third-person omniscient narration. But that didn’t happen. And I was confused. And to add to the confusion, the author keep interjecting random strange chapters into the novel, each focusing on a very detailed physical and emotional description of different famous works of art. These short art chapters (there are 13 of them in a novel with a total of 76 chapters)—see the list of the art works at the end of this review—were narrated in the second person, i.e., using “you” as the voice. They exist, perhaps as a literary device, to pull the reader intimately into the novel, to make us believe that we are the ones doing the observing of each artwork…and then, by projection, that we are the fly-on-the-wall voyeurs, intimately peeking in on the lives of the Murphy family.

The primary narrator is never conclusively revealed. It could be the author or one of the characters in the novel. If so, it is no doubt Nora, because she emerges as the book’s main character and is the one most interested in art. Regardless, the narrator is human, not God-like. The narrator infers all human thought and emotions. The narrator is a keen analytical observer of life, nothing more. In some ways, the narrator is like a person in an art gallery. The narrator studies each scene in the lives of this family just like a visitor to an art gallery might stand in front of a painting and study it carefully, trying to infer all knowledge that can be inferred from the slightest clue.

This is an emotionally rich and meditative novel. The imagery is as precise and expressive as any of the famous works of art described in the thirteen art chapters. A great deal of care was taken in choosing exactly how each scene is described. Every word has purpose and weight.

This is an exquisite novel of subtle beauty and abundant depth. If it were a reading assignment in an advanced contemporary American literature seminar, I could think of any number of major concepts contained within it that easily could lend themselves to academic analysis.

As promised, here is a list of the famous works of art that are described in detail within this book. I suggest that you do an Internet image search on each work and have it in front of you, to study, while you read each of these chapters. Doing this will significantly increase your reading pleasure. It will also help pull you inside the story, inside the lives of these characters, so you become that analytical and empathetic “fly-on-the-wall voyeur” that the author want you to become. If there is any connection between these works of art and the story within the novel, it is that the main character, Nora, keeps a beloved shoebox full of museum gallery postcards of famous works of art just like these. She takes the box out and studies her art treasure photos whenever she needs quiet time by herself to recharge her emotional strength.

More theory than practice!

As a commercial GPS user, I was looking for a book that would offer a fairly basic overview of GPS, but that would still go into significant detail. This book does exactly that, but it also covers a lot of the mathematical theory behind GPS. This book certainly isn't introductory and I think would be more suited to a surveyor with a good knowledge of surveying techniques who was interested in GPS. The mathematics gets a bit heavy for a non-mathematician but Chapter 7 (Surveying with GPS) is an excellent introduction/review of the practical uses of GPS in the field. A good intermediate-advanced level book, probably very suited to students.

A resource for more than just GPS

This is an excellent book for anyone that works with spacecraft geometry and/or timekeeping. It contains concise descriptions of coordinate systems, orbital elements and timekeeping. I've been using it as an algorithm 'cookbook'. This is not a book for a casual GPS user, or someone who is sqeamish about math. It's much easier to use than the Astronomical Almanac for basic algorithms. Like a fool, I lent it out. Now I need to buy another one.
