There are better books out their for adolescent readers. Convenient plotting, too often the characters' actions feel like the author's idea and not theirs, and it's unremittingly bleak.

We Don't Need Another Hero: Struggle, Hope and Possibility in the Age of High-Stakes Schooling, by Gregory Michie

In his latest book, bestselling author Gregory Michie critiques high-stakes schooling and provides a powerful alternative vision of teaching as a humanistic enterprise, students as multidimensional beings, and schools as spaces where young people can imagine and become, not just achieve. Drawing on his experiences over the past two decades as a classroom teacher, community volunteer, researcher, and teacher educator in Chicago's public schools, Michie offers compelling accounts of teaching and learning in urban America. Mindful of the complex realities educators face, he portrays urban schools as they really are: sites of struggle, hope, and possibility.

At a time when others relentlessly trumpet a competitive, data-driven, corporatized notion of education, the essays in We Don't Need Another Hero challenge the dominant images of failing urban schools and bad teachers. Like Michie's now classic Holler If You Hear Me, this book gives much-needed hope to new and seasoned teachers alike. It is also an important resource for school administrators, policymakers, parents, and anyone who wants to better understand what is really happening in American schools.

Gregory Michie teaches in the Department of Foundations and Social Policy at Concordia University Chicago. He is the bestselling author of Holler If You Hear Me: The Education of a Teacher and His Students, Second Edition, and See You When We Get There: Teaching for Change in Urban Schools.

“Greg Michie is right: we don't need another hero. The heroes are already there: they are our students, as well as the teachers and administrators who have a passion for justice. Those are the voices we must heed.”
—From the Foreword by Sonia Nieto, professor emerita, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

“There is no writer working today who captures the excruciating complexity of a life in teaching with as much grace and clarity as Gregory Michie. These everyday heroes are the heart of teaching and the soul of democracy.”
—William Ayers, educator and bestselling author of To Teach, Third Edition and Teaching the Taboo

“Gregory Michie's experiences in the classroom and his purview post-teaching make this a good peek into the thoughts of a man willing to challenge the current notions of education reform. Rather than sit in frustration over the current tenor surrounding these so-called reforms, Michie seeks meaningful progress and solutions.”
—Jose Luis Vilson, NYC Public School lead teacher and writer at TheJoseVilson.com

"Good liberal intentions are not enough."
By Dienne
The missionary zeal, born of the "White Man's Burden", seems to have returned home to roost right in our own major cities. Highly educated, generally quite well off, often (although not always) well-intentioned white people have decided that inner city children shouldn't be left to founder at "failing" schools. School reform (measured almost exclusively by increases in standardized test scores) "can't wait". Education is, according to these modern missionaries, "the civil rights issue of our time." Fortunately, these missionaries know just what to do. They think.

Like foreign missionaries, these bright-eyed young urban missionaries overlook the role of their own dominant culture in creating the "need" for their help in the first place. Elephant-in-the-room issues like race, class and poverty get swept aside as mere "excuses". What's needed are higher expectations, more "rigorous" demands, and greater "accountability".

I suspect, although I admit I don't know, that Gregory Michie was originally one of those starry-eyed, rather blind missionaries. As a young, white, professional male, he took advantage of a truncated career change education program which places proven professionals into urban classrooms without going through a complete, accredited teacher certification program. The theory behind most such programs is that people with proven management and other professional skills can bring their experience in to transform urban education, often along business model lines. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out as planned, as many of these transplants realize that teaching in an urban environment is a bit more complicated than balancing spreadsheets and many don't stay in the classroom for long.

As I indicated, I don't know Gregory Michie's motivations for getting into urban education. But it turned out that he was one of the good guys. He realized that perhaps things aren't so simple as they seem. He appreciated the disconnect between his affluent white male privilege and the disadvantage his predominantly poor and minority students came from. He was willing to not only acknowledge, but also explore and confront issues of race, class and prejudice, including listening to his students and allowing himself to learn from them, even about his own biases and blind spots. It takes a great deal of strength and security to be that vulnerable, but it has paid dividends in terms of Michie's deep understanding of the educational needs of urban kids and the disconnect with the methods more and more being used to "educate" them - the "pedagogy of poverty" as Michie quotes Martin Haberman.

There is a distinct and growing divide between how children of the rich and elite are educated vs. children of the poor (middle class kids are somewhere in between, but slipping toward the poor end). Barack Obama sends his daughters to Sidwell Friends School, while Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel sends his kids to the University of Chicago Lab Schools. Both schools keep class sizes small. Direct instruction in reading and math make up only a small part of the curriculum and are integrated across disciplines to connect with science and social studies. Both schools further enrich their curricula with arts, music, languages, electives, P.E. and recess, and both have well-stocked libraries and athletic and arts facilities. The type of education that both Obama and Duncan envision for the rest of the country, however, is increasingly impoverished and stripped down to bare-bones basics. Long blocks of reading and math time focus heavily on drilling for skills and rote memory to be measured by regular standardized tests. Minimal time is left over for arts, physical education or other enrichment. Both Obama and Duncan favor expanded use of charter schools, especially "no excuses" type schools like KIPP which use "drill-to-kill" techniques, and extended, highly structured days with little room for individual expression, exploration or creativity.

These "no-excuses" schools are supposed to address the so-called "achievement gap" between whites and minorities by focusing specifically on basic skills and necessary facts. But in fact, in all important ways, educational "reforms" are actually widening the gap because poor and minority kids are increasingly denied opportunities to be connected to and involved with meaningful and relevant learning experiences. Research has repeatedly shown that humans - especially children - simply cannot learn large bodies of facts or skills in isolation from experience. Yet educational policy leaders continue to focus on the model of children as empty vessels who need to be filled up with "knowledge". Poor and minority students especially get turned off and demoralized by "educational" experiences which in no way connect to their actual lived experience.

The solution, Michie argues, is not to have more affluent whites dictating what urban children should learn, how they should learn it, and how they should be assessed on their learning. The solution is to return control to the local level - individual schools and teachers - and to teach for "social justice". Poor and minority kids don't live in a vacuum. They see injustices and discrimination all around them. Pretending that all is well and that they too can succeed if only they "work hard, be nice" alienates kids (and is, frankly, offensive), especially teenagers who see the reality most clearly. Teaching for social justice acknowledges the real life struggles kids face on a daily basis, explores the history behind them, and encourages kids to develop their own meaningful solutions to correct injustices and overcome challenges. Kids still learn all the basic academic information and skills that they need, they just learn them enfolded in a meaningful, engaging curriculum that invites their participation rather than excluding them from the conversation at all.

Throughout the book, Michie gives several examples of how he himself struggled to implement such a vision and how he now encourages his teachers-in-training to view and implement such ideas. He also gives several examples of other teachers, principals and schools which are bucking the standardized trend and "educating against the grain". The key for Michie and the other educators is to view the kids as people rather than data. Building relationships and inspiring true learning are more important than test scores. Ironically, both Obama and Duncan agree with Michie, at least for their own children's education. Too bad they have other ideas for other people's children.

The title of the book is a direct refutation of the movie "Waiting for Superman" which celebrated "reformers" such as Michelle Rhee and all the failed notions they have advanced over the past decade or more. It's not about getting a bunch of "highly effective" cloned teachers using identical canned lessons. It's about teachers putting themselves into their teaching and relating to their students on a personal basis. I recommend this book strongly to anyone and everyone, but especially to those who believe that privatized charter schools are preferable to "entrenched" unionized public schools. Don't be fooled by the "for the children" rhetoric. If it were about the children, their voices, along with the voices of those who know them best - their teachers and parents - would be heard, rather than the corporate interests who currently control the debate. If I thought he'd read it, I'd personally send a copy of this book to President Obama.

Greg Michie Gets It!
By Joel O. Estes
This is a compelling book about the state of American education. As a former classroom teacher in Chicago Public Schools and a teacher educator, Greg Michie has been on the front lines of the struggle that is happening in schools across our country. He has seen the impact of huge social issues, of bureaucracy and regulation, and of the inspiring work of everyday teachers. Throughout the text, Michie inserts stories of children, families, and teachers that uplift and inspire. It is easy for the reader to feel as though they're right there in the classroom with him. His common sense perspective, that we don't need more regulations or even more heroes, rings true in the stories he tells. He convincingly proposes the idea that we need to support, not attack, the people and relationships of the people that inhabit our schools. His call for a more humanistic approach to education should not fall on deaf ears. Development of creativity and a love of learning are the key targets we should be seeking for our children. While the foreword and cover information present this book as a collection of essays, it's much more than that. This book is a tapestry of vision and hope for the future of schools in America. We Don't Need Another Hero is a must read for anyone who cares about schooling in America.

Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right, by Arlie Russell Hochschild

2016 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST FOR NONFICTION

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

One of “6 Books to Understand Trump’s Win” according to the New York Times the day after the election

“This is a smart, respectful and compelling book.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“Satisfying... [Hochschild’s] analysis is overdue at a time when questions of policy and legislation and even fact have all but vanished from the public discourse.”
—The New York Review of Books

“Hochschild moves beyond the truism that less affluent voters who support small government and tax cuts are voting against their own economic interest.”
—O Magazine

In Strangers in Their Own Land, the renowned sociologist Arlie Hochschild embarks on a thought-provoking journey from her liberal hometown of Berkeley, California, deep into Louisiana bayou country—a stronghold of the conservative right. As she gets to know people who strongly oppose many of the ideas she famously champions, Hochschild nevertheless finds common ground and quickly warms to the people she meets—among them a Tea Party activist whose town has been swallowed by a sinkhole caused by a drilling accident—people whose concerns are actually ones that all Americans share: the desire for community, the embrace of family, and hopes for their children.

Strangers in Their Own Land goes beyond the commonplace liberal idea that these are people who have been duped into voting against their own interests. Instead, Hochschild finds lives ripped apart by stagnant wages, a loss of home, an elusive American dream—and political choices and views that make sense in the context of their lives. Hochschild draws on her expert knowledge of the sociology of emotion to help us understand what it feels like to live in “red” America. Along the way she finds answers to one of the crucial questions of contemporary American politics: why do the people who would seem to benefit most from “liberal” government intervention abhor the very idea?

—Heather Mallick, The Toronto Star

—Nathaniel Rich, The New York Review of Books

"Up close there is a depth to the concerns of Hochschild’s subjects...They are concerned about pollution, and about the social decay that we see most vividly in the opioid epidemic. They are aware...of facts on the ground."
—Benjamin Wallace-Wells, The New Yorker

"Strangers in Their Own Land is extraordinary for its consistent empathy and the attention it pays to the emotional terrain of politics. It is billed as a book for this moment, but it will endure."
—Gabriel Thompson, Newsday

[Hochschild’s] connection and kindness to the people she meets is what makes this book so powerful.
—Marion Winik, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Hochschild is fascinated by how people make sense of their lives...[She] conveys that she genuinely likes the people she meets, communicating their dignity and values...These attentive, detailed portraits...reveal a gulf between Hochschild’s Strangers in Their Own Land and a new elite."
—Jedediah Purdy, The New Republic

"The importance of emotion in politics, not just facts and figures, [Hochschild] writes convincingly, is critical to understand...a point politicians of all stripes would be smart to remember."
—Felice Belman, The Boston Globe

"The anger and hurt of the author’s interviewees is intelligible to all. In today’s political climate, this may be invaluable."
—The Economist

"Arlie Russell Hochschild’s Strangers in Their Own Land will certainly be among the most timely of books in this moment of seeming near apocalypse...remarkable."
—Sean McCann, The Los Angeles Review of Books

—Forbes

"An important contribution to the understanding of our times… Strangers in Their Own Land describes in vivid detail a world that is often ignored or caricatured by the media and by many liberals."
—The Nation

“[Hochschild’s] deeply humble approach is refreshing and strengthens her research…. She skillfully invites liberal readers into the lives of Americans whose views they may have never seriously considered. After evaluating her conclusions and meeting her informants in these pages, it’s hard to disagree that empathy is the best solution to stymied political and social discourse."
—Publishers Weekly

“A well-told chronicle of an ambitious sociological project of significant current importance.”
—Kirkus Reviews

"If the great political question of our time can be summarized in the two words, ‘Donald Trump,’ the answer is to be found in Arlie Russell Hochschild’s brilliant new book, Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right. Hochschild, an eminent sociologist with a novelist’s storytelling skill, has crafted an absorbing tale full of richly drawn, complicated characters who come bearing their own fascinating histories. Together, in Hochschild’s authoritative hands, they offer a compelling and lucid portrait of what had seemed a bewildering political moment. A powerful, imaginative, necessary book, arriving not a moment too soon."
—Mark Danner, author of Spiral: Trapped in the Forever War

"Arlie Hochschild journeys into a far different world than her liberal academic enclave of Berkeley, into the heartland of the nation’s political right, in order to understand how the conservative white working class sees America. With compassion and empathy, she discovers the narrative that gives meaning and expression to their lives–and which explains their political convictions, along with much else. Anyone who wants to understand modern America should read this captivating book."
—Robert B. Reich, Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley

"The celebrated sociologist Arlie Hochschild left Berkeley and went far outside her comfort zone to live among and report on Tea Party members in Louisiana over five years. With the clear-headed empathy she is famous for, she explored the central paradox of these political activists in the heart of ‘cancer alley’: they understand that the chemical and oil companies have destroyed their environment and sometimes their lives, but they remain ardent defenders of free market capitalism. Hochschild spent many hours—at church services, picnics and kitchen tables—probing the ways they struggle to reconcile their conflicting interests and loyalties. There could not be a more important topic in current American politics, nor a better person to dissect it. Every page—every story and individual—is fascinating, and the emerging analysis is revelatory."
—Barbara Ehrenreich

"In her attempt to climb over the ‘empathy wall’ and truly understand the emotional lives of her political adversaries, Arlie Hochschild gives us a vital roadmap to bridging the deep divides in our political landscape and renewing the promise of American democracy. A must-read for any political American who isn’t ready to give up just yet."
—Joan Blades, co-founder of LivingRoomConversations.org, MomsRising.org, and MoveOn.org

"Arlie Russell Hochschild’s work has never been more timely or more necessary, from the resurgence of interest in emotional labor to this deep, empathetic dive into the heart of the Right. Strangers in Their Own Land does what few dare to do—it takes seriously the role of feelings in politics."
—Sarah Jaffe, author of Necessary Trouble: Americans in Revolt

And, don't eat the fish....
By Emily M Kline
Ever since Jeffrey Sachs hit me between the eyes with a two-by-four with The Price of Civilization I have been devouring every book I can find on the subject of the American voter who seems to be voting the country into destruction by ignoring what is happening all around us. The spotlight seems to have settled on the segment of society described in White Trash, Hillbilly Elegy, Thomas Frank's book about Kansas and a number of others, all attempting to understand what we now see as a Trump supporter. Strangers in Their Own land, in my opinion, is one of the best of these books I have read. The author is different in that she has much more compassion for her subjects and does not sink to ridicule out of exasperation...a common reflex when people seem to be acting against all reason and prudence...but she makes a real effort to understand them and the source of this perplexing behavior. I have learned that there is no arguing with their point of view, but for those of us trying to make sure that we ourselves are not losing our minds, the statistical information in this book is clear and relevant and to me, worth the price of the book.

A fairly objective look at the inner workings of Louisiana's political and industrial culture
By J.J.
I took a particular interest in this book because I am actually from Lake Charles and grew up there, until leaving at 17 to join the Navy. I felt the author did a fair job in setting the scene. At first she made it sound like a primitive back-woods kind of place, but eased into a more flattering depiction once she was talking to some of the local people. That's what makes South La great anyway, the people. The book offers several interesting paradoxes: the main paradox of why people are so right-leaning, big government hating in a state that relies so heavily on federal subsidies, and also the juxtaposition of people needing big industry for their livelihoods, but also hating that they have to live with its pollution and corruption within the state government. She uses a lot of statistics and facts to make her points, and for the most part, I found it's an objective analysis of the state and explaining it's political leaning.

The Great Paradox Personified
By Tom A. Hall
I have been fortunate to become familiar with the places and people of Louisiana described in this book and I can't begin to express how grateful I am to the author for delving into explaining "the great paradox". I am Californian born and raised and originally traveled to southwest Louisiana to pick up an accordion made by Mark Savoy in Eunice LA. I keep returning because the people I met, and friends I made, are as kind, gentle, open and intelligent as the folks described here. But, try as I might to reconcile the differences in our social/political views I failed....until I read this book! Thank-you Arlie Russell Hochschild for offering this bridge between the right and the left. Fellow MSNBC watchers, after reading this book I urge you to visit southwest Louisiana yourself - you will never view "the South" or Southerners, the same.

Women's Spirituality: Contemporary Feminist Approaches to Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Goddess Worship, by Johanna H Stuckey

Nonfiction. Women's Studies. Religion. WOMEN'S SPIRITUALITY: CONTEMPORARY FEMINIST APPROACHES TO JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY, ISLAM AND GODDESS WORSHIP comes directly out of women's grassroots efforts to understand and transform their spiritual traditions. It is a comprehensive account of the discussions, arguments, perspectives and approaches of contemporary women in Canada toward spirituality and the monotheistic religions. The author presents a concise history of each religion, discusses normative practices and focuses on the roles, rituals and rights of contemporary women as they accommodate to and deal with their respective religions. WOMEN'S SPIRITUALITY deals with women's encounters with spirituality within the framework of Judaism, Christianity and Islam and outside of this framework within the new religions of contemporary Goddess worship. An updated, and revised edition of Stuckey's successful 1998 book, Feminist Spirituality: An Introduction to Feminist Theology in Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Feminist Goddess Worship, this book will be useful to anyone unfamiliar with the work of feminists within any or all of the three monotheistic traditions that have been so crucial to shaping western attitudes to and treatment of women.

Brilliant Overview of Womens's Spirituality Today
By Pegi Eyers
"Women's Spirituality" is a brilliant overview of the transformational efforts by historic and modern feminists within the "big three" monotheistic religions, and is also a portrait of feminist goddess worship, defined as a revolutionary new spirituality that has the potential to "alter the spiritual landscape of the West"!

Stuckey says that feminist religious theology, working from the inside (or outside) to make patriarchal religions more hospitable to women, is new, experiential and experimental, with the focus being on issues of sexism and the lack of female leaders. Monotheistic religions have been responsible for shaping negative Western attitudes toward women, and she examines the history, tenets and worship practices of each.

From its beginnings, the Hebrew Bible stated than "men rule over women" and Judaic women's roles and spiritual expression were located in the domestic sphere only, separate from temple-sanctioned worship and official ceremonies. It has only been since 1983 that women have been allowed into Judaic seminaries and to be ordained as Rabbis. Today, Judaic feminist visionaries and scholars are working toward recovering Judaic Goddesses and the contributions of historic women, and developing a feminist vision of equality for all - a "post-patriarchal Judaism" - that will allow women to analyze the sacred texts, take part in public ritual, and fill leadership roles.

Stuckey touches on the current debates that question if early Christianity was egalitarian, if Jesus was a feminist, or if he was married to Mary Magdalene. Church fathers obscured women's vital roles in the origins of Christianity, and declared their faith anti-body, anti-sexual and anti-woman. In recent decades, the important contributions of Mother Mary, Mary Magdalene and other significant women have come to light, and Christian feminists have been concerned with dualism, sexism, the maleness of language & imagery, and the lack of female leaders. Currently, ordained female ministers are on the rise, and up to 80% of the students in theological schools are now women!

In early Islamic history, Muhammad's wives and daughters, other heroines, religious scholars and the warrior women who fought in key battles had pivotal roles. However, as the Islamic world expanded, the dynasties became completely male-dominated, and women were discriminated against, veiled, denied access to the religious community, bound by law and restricted to the household. As it is still very dangerous to declare oneself a feminist in Muslim countries today, many live and work in the West.

Stuckey says that the feminists who have remained inside Judaism, Christianity and Islam are undertaking the difficult, unpopular, and sometimes dangerous task of bringing about in their traditions changes that, when in place, could transform them in ways we can now only imagine.

She goes on to fit the work of feminist activity and theology into four overlapping categories: (1) Revisionist, the least extreme, that argues correct interpretation will reveal a liberating message at the core of a religion (2) Renovationist, which identifies the core message as well as elements of sexism, and either denies those elements or seeks to replace them with feminine texts and images (3) Revolutionary, which forces a religion to its limits by importing language and images from another tradition ie. Goddess Spirituality, and (4) Rejectionist, that decides a religion is completely hostile to women and leaves it behind, usually going on to create new spiritual traditions.

Finally, Stuckey celebrates the fascinating history of feminist goddess worship as an empowering new religion that has blossomed within the last 30 years. She examines the foundation myth central to the tradition as explored in early goddess scholarship; the definition of deity; the Wiccan tradition; the creative aspect of ritual; political action and the tenets of sacred ecology. "As a sacred history, the foundation myth is both extremely emotionally satisfying and deeply enriching for feminist goddess worshippers. It tells women about ancient goddess worship, ancient matriarchies, the violent patriarchal take-over, women's creativity and sacred bodily functions, women's natural power and strength, the return of the Goddess, women's re-empowerment in a Goddess-centered spirituality, a way to reconnect with nature, and the transformation of self and society."

A reflection of Stuckey's long-time involvement with the women's movement as a feminist, scholar and teacher, this comprehensive work will be useful as an textbook in leading-edge curriculum, and as a resource for all women on a spiritual path and/or devotees of Goddess Spirituality.

The Must-Have, Essential Guide for Your Canon T5!
By Susan Mannion
Your Canon T5 comes with an instruction booklet and more documentation on CDs. That's enough to get you started, but if you really want to take full advantage of your T5, you must buy this book. Trust me, it's money well spent! I discovered my T5 had far more sophisticated features than I realized. This book not only takes you through the mechanics of using these features, it also explains how to get the best exposures for myriad situations. The format is easy-to-read; the writing clear and concise.

I was "just OK" with my Canon T5 until I read this book. Now, I'm thrilled with it because it does so much more than what I thought after reading Canon's documentation that came with the camera. Even you're happy just shooting on Auto or using the presets on the camera, this book is offers helpful tips on how to get the best shot possible. If you want to take control of your T5 and take full advantage of everything it has to offer, you NEED this book!

PLEASE NOTE: I also bought the Kindle version so I would have the information handy for reference on my phone and tablet. I found the Kindle version to be not as user friendly as I'd hoped and for the expensive price, I would not recommend it.

Order the physical book rather than the downloadable kindle version
By LA mom
I ordered the kindle version of this book and it has been extremely difficult to navigate back and forth between sections. For this type of book, it is probably better to order the paper-back version.

I'm a Dummy, and I could understand this guide.
By Holly Julian
Before buying my T5, I practiced with my boyfriend's T3. He couldn't explain all the settings and buttons, and some of what he explained, I didn't understand. This book really helped this strictly point-and-shoot photographer understand how to work with a DSLR. I love this book and i love my new camera!
