This is a gripping and amazing story of survival in the antarctic. I was thoroughly engaged throughout this account. Ms. Alexander is an outstanding writer whose version holds the reader on the edge. Wonderfully written; Keep reading below to understand why...

I have looked through several analysis books, but as an undergraduate student in mathematics, I found this textbook to be the most appealing. Here is why I'd give this book 5 stars:

(1) The straight-forwardness of the text.
Most undergraduate math students (it's a very large majority) find analysis to be one of the most challenging courses in the undergraduate mathematics curriculum. Building upon calculus, discrete mathematics, etc., the course delves into a lot of abstract and analytical material most math students have always taken for granted. The point is: it's a tough course, with incredibly dry reading. However, the authors of this book, while keeping the same rigor and thoroughness that the subject demands, write the book in a very reader-friendly manner so that with ample time and patience, students reading the book can fully grasp the material at hand. In classes like college algebra or even trigonometry, such a manner may not always be necessary as reasonably intelligent students can figure out a lot of the material; however, in a course like analysis, a straight-forward language goes a very, very long ways.

(2) Examples.
I have read other analysis books- some published by Springer, which publishes a series titled "Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics"- and unfortunately, most of them do not feature too many examples, thus leaving the student wondering if he has understood the material sufficiently. A little application can really help keep the confidence of the reader, and the authors of this book litter each section with an ample amount of examples.

(3) The provision of- in a very cautious amount- of answers and solutions in the back.
Again, unlike other analysis books, this text provides solutions to some problems in the book of the book. However, the solutions are sparse, so as to help the reader understand the solutions to similar problems in the section, but to protect the reader from the temptation of looking in the back for all the assigned math problems. Even well-meaning students fall in the trap of depending on the answers sections, and this book finds the great balance of providing just the amount of answers in the back.

Honestly, if your intention was to learn analysis, whether part of a class or on your own, you will find that this book will provide you with more tools than obstacles. There are, unfortunately, many awkwardly written and confusing math books that exist; fortunately, this book is not one of them.

An excellent non-topological approach for undergraduates

In this textbook the authors have provided an important classroom tool for teaching undergraduates introductory real analysis. Without sacrificing rigor, they treat all the classical topics and principal theorems (convergence of sequences, limits and continuity of functions, differentiation, integration) in a lucid manner by exploiting the elementary machinery of sequences. This approach, free from the technical abstractions of general topology, makes the book much more readable for the average junior/senior level student majoring or minoring in mathematics. I have used the book for a one-semester course, and I don't think I would revert to the standard topological method for ordinary students in a first course in real analysis. Some of the main results can be re-derived as corollaries in a follow-up course on point-set topology for students interested in attending graduate school.

Beautiful book!

I have taught this book at least five times. I use it to teach non-graduate track math majors (many are math-secondary math ed majors). I absolutely love working with this book. Since it is currently out of print I have regularly sought the author's permission for the students to make copies if they can't find it used. I can't wait to see it printed again. It is a joy for me to work the material this way.
It is very thorough math, while all the way allowing for almost taking the students by the hand through their first analysis proofs class. The exercises are a real gem. I spend about 1/3 of the class time working recitation-like on exercises.

I got this book for my apprenticeship. It has a lot of old school tips and tricks for a beginning student and from my earlier training this book was still used by some journeymen/women. The more recent editions involve new retrofitting and ecofriendly demo. This 3rd edition still uses most of the same methods found in the new books. I wasn't disappointed.

Book condition: Fair, used, suffered water damage on my end. Hard cover bound, ©1997 (in my opinion this book has "journeyed" out, which makes it experienced)

Readability: Intermediate, simple, and very detailed. Has diagrams, tables, glossary, index, unit sections, pictures, etc.

Level: Carpenter Apprentice or refresher

If u have not seen the newer Koel books, i suggest researching that first by comparing the two. After all, this is your knowledge on the line.

The definitive text...

This book is generally considered to be the best and most comprehensive carpentry textbook. It's a must for the professional and highly recommended if you're a do-it-yourselfer. I know it's expensive but, because it touches on all aspects of the "master craft," it will save you from buying a specialty book (concrete, finish, framing, etc.) every time you go to the home improvement store. This is also the text that is used by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters to train all of its apprentices.

Excellent book for workers and homeowners.

This was one of my textbooks while studying construction in college. In truth, I loathe that I sold this thing back...buy it and hang onto it, as I have yet to see another book on carpentry that covered as much ground as this one did. This is an "easy read" too, with ample pictures and diagrams. The version/edition of this textbook I used came with an interactive CD for computer use, the CD was pretty worthless and just was a carbon copy of what was in the book already in print form, but it's there if you need it I geuss.

The author gives an easy, logical way to integrate the interpretations of the sun signs, moon signs, planets, and houses in any given chart, something not easily done or often seen in general astrology books. The book's only shortcoming is its lack of instruction on making a detailed technical chart, which is necessary if one is to cast a complete and accurate horoscope. However, Woolfolk compensates for this by teaching a simplified method that is about 90 percent accurate enough to get a beginner started and includes a bibliography for further instruction. If you want to learn how to cast charts and interpret go to a more advanced book

I am a professional Astrologer who has studied astrology for 16 years now. This was my first Astrology book at 15 and it was a very dim general introduction.To advise you before buying: It is very dumbed down for the novice to understand. There are better books to get a better understanding about astrology. The art of chart interpretation is complex and cannot be that simplified. If you want to accurately learn astrology then I suggest authors like Stephen Arroyo,Steven Forrest,Kevin Burke, ,Noel Tyl. I teach basic astrology and I would never recommend this book to my students. In an effort to be fair I will say if you do not want to cast charts and know some slight details on houses ,signs etc then this is a decent introduction but by no means is this a great book for the beginning astrology student. I will say although it was (((my first book)))) It never took me to that next level I was seeking. If I would have relied on it as my only book I would not be a good astrologer today.

Not the only one you'll need, and not the best introduction

The title really is false advertising: You can't even do the kind of astrology that's described in the book with just this book, as you need an ephemeris--a chart that tells you what degree your planets are in--to figure out the aspects between planets, and this is a central part of astrology. You can find an ephemeris--as well as more helpful readings of what planets in signs and houses mean--from Parker's Astrology, a far superior all-in-one astrology book. Much of Woolfolk's book has a cut-and-paste feel. There's a chintziness about the writing that is in keeping with the choice of such a cheesy, mercenary title. I'd like to single out the section on synastry, or chart comparison, which is bad to the point of being harmful. I give this book two stars rather than one because it can give a beginner a general idea of what real astrology is about, and may lead them on to more serious books. So it has some value to the extent that its title is wrong.

Excellent book on classical dynamics : A Dynamicist from MA

I refer to the 1970 edition.
This is a pleasure reading for the analytically oriented reader.
It is about classical dynamics, some basic non-linear dynamics and no modern coordinates-free approach. It is from 1970 so naturally it is not about Multi-Body dynamics. The attitude rotation is restricted to Euler angles and the book doesn't mention Quaternion and other attitude representations. However, it is one of the best books on the subject of particles and rigid body dynamics. Moreover, there are excellent chapters on celestial mechanics and on spacecraft dynamics. The chapter on celestial mechanics is self contained, comprehensive and it is written as an integral part of analytical dynamics. It includes Lagrange's planetary equations, the restricted three body problem and the gravitational potential both in spherical harmonics and in inertia integrals. One can get a good theoretical background on this subject by reading only this book. There is a chapter on classical perturbation theory with demonstrations of the main methods and a chapter on Hamiltonian transformation theory. There is even a nice derivation of Floquet theory for system with periodic coefficient and a derivation of the Lagrangian in quasi-coordinates. In short, this book is a treasure, written meticulously and humbly. One reviewer wrote that the book chapters were taken from other books, as Goldstein. It is half true; almost every classical dynamics book written during last 80 years used previous works (the same for Goldstein). But some material, like gravitational inertia integrals and satellite stability using Hamiltonian is original contribution. Meirovitch is definitely not Poincaré and even not Whittaker, but he did an excellent job in editing, presenting and explaining the material.

An advanced book

The book is advanced and gives you good insight into the dynamic problems. I would also recommend "Principles and Techniques of Vibrations" by the same author.

Thorough, Complete

Great book written in a concise style. The general methods on how to go about analyzing a problem have been given in rigorous detail. The use of tensor and vector notations make the derivations very general, which is nice. This book is a step up in difficulty level from Taylor's book (which is pretty wordy and covers less breadth despite its size - good beginner's book though) and should be use to gain a very thorough physical and mathematical understanding of the subject. Cons: Like most textbooks, its solved problems are pretty easy, so you may struggle a bit with the unsolved exercises.
