I found this book to be exceptional in all ways. The information is new and fresh and what I loved the most is how David joins every area with God. David gives you straight forward advise, he doesn't pull any punches and he writes it all in a free flowing easy to understand manner. This is a book that you will refer to time and time again. This a great introduction to cults around the world who practice the Magick of the Left Hand Path. It shows that such practices spring up spontaneously, and therefore are somehow deeply imbedded in our consciousness, destined to spring up from time-to-time and place-to-place.

the 3rd of the Typhonian trilogies

These Skoob books are great reprints of Kenneth Grant's earlier works. This one is originally printed in 1975. There are 9 books in the trilogies. Grant has been around for a while and already had a strong background in tantric and buddhist knowledge when he became Crowley's secretary.
He is believed to have been granted the OHO (10th and highest degree) in the O.'.T.'.O.'. and in that capacity founded an operative lodge called Nu Isis which explored and laid a foundation for many of his further works.
In regards to this particular book Grant takes an eclectic approach which attempts to find in gematria values hidden links which lie between the ancient rites of Egypt, Crowley's A.'.A.'., Theosophy, Vedic/Tantric, ancient African cults and voudon Gnosis. His chapter on Michael Bertiaux's Voudon Gnostic teachings is a good introduction to a great modern gnostic thinker/teacher.
Additionally the inclusion of several pages of illustrations by Austin Osman Spare, Steffi Grant(his wife)and others makes these books a worthwhile inclusion in a library.

Typhonian Life Goes On

I now own 6 of Grant's 9 books of the Typhonian trilogies; and every one is a treasure trove of dark strangeness. I really wish someone would print some cheaper editions of them all, as the last two were only published in editions of 1500 each, and are very expensive now. But for anyone who wants to take a walk on the wild side of occultism, I highly recommend Grant's works. Pick up any one and give it a try. Egyptian death and sex magick, Kabbalah, Crowleyian workings, dark tantra...it's all here.

It is a clear outlined book with all the features of methodology you need. The authors elaborate about each subject in an understandable way. It is a good guideline for writing (doctoral) thesis or other academic paper.
They focus mainly on qualitative research but also the quantitative part is touched upon. If you are stucked during your writing proces this book can help, it give explicite examples how to handle things.

Very good for undergraduate studies but very limited use for doctoral coursework

Despite references to graduate research usage, this is really an undergraduate-level introductory guide to business research methods.
While it is written with a clean layout and in a 'modern' style - good fresh illustrations of the major points, enough diagrams to break up the text, etc - it is just too superficial to be a core text for a doctoral research methods course.

Good, but with some caveats.

Cecily is a third generation member of the Knight Guard, setting out for her first battle. Her heirloom sword has seen better days, and the magnificent sword wielded by a mysterious stranger makes her desperate to acquire one from the same blacksmith. Being well prepared is a good inclination, as after forty-four years of peace demon pacts are returning...

I had heard of the Sacred Blacksmith manga and anime, but didn't know much going in. From the cover and back description I was expecting light fantasy/adventure, likely with some fanservice overtones. It's actually quite serious most of the time, with dark omens and dire situations constantly around the corner. I like the characters and the story thus far, but none of it is particularly original. As for the fanservice... it's there, and doesn't really fit. I'll discuss below.

The art is extremely good, but tends to get in its own way during fights and action sequences. Character designs, details, and intricate town and countryside backgrounds are all excellent. The artist tries too hard for the action scenes though and they get muddled and confusing with way too many action lines and effects.

The fanservice is weird. As I mentioned above the manga is more dark and serious than I expected, and then every once in a while in the most contrived way possible we get a pinup shot. They're beautiful, and I don't mind fanservice in some cases, but it's shoehorned in so obviously here it really breaks up the immersion and any tension that had been achieved.

Some examples: After her first battle Cecily has an attack of nerves, and clearly begins to fall forward as her knees lock. She suddenly switches direction in the next panel to sprawl BACKWARDS to end up sitting, back arched and legs apart. Later she heroically acts as a human shield and is hit with numerous shards of ice. The total effect of this barrage is to tear off her armor and clothes beneath and cause her to faint into the arms of another character for another pose (if she has some magical shield that protects her skin from cuts none was mentioned...)

So overall I'm finding it hard to pin down The Sacred Blacksmith. It's well done for the most part, has strong art and features interesting characters and situations. On the other hand it's pretty standard for the genre concept-wise, is very jarring in mixing tones and seems to be lacking something that would compel me to want to read more. Call it decent, probability of continuing with the series unknown.

If you like Berserk try this one

The Sacred Blacksmith is really entertaining. The art is very good and the story is unique. I had a Berserk felling while reading it. It's not as dark and violent as Berserk but it has demons and sword fighting like Berserk. If you like Berserk style stories give this a try.

I am a bit on the fence on this one. I like the concept and the artwork and story are generally pretty good. However the "fight scenes" often take up several pages just to show a couple swipes of the sword, so to me there is a lot of wasted space. I also wouldn't mind a bit more humor thrown in. There is a touch of fan service, but only a few images. I will likely pick up the second volume to see where it goes, but am hoping for a bit of improvement to really grab my attention.

Ann Frederick's story: How Fascial Stretch Therapy™ came about

When I was a young girl, I had a premonition that I was destined to create something that would unite art and science. I was unsure what it would be or when it would happen, but I knew it was my calling. I also knew it would change the way people looked at the topic and that it would eventually spread worldwide. When it occurred, the development of FST felt like a combination of divine guidance and pure necessity.

FST has been a blessing beyond words. People may question why I would want to teach a technique I had developed and lose the exclusivity of being the only person to offer it. My response has always been that when we are given a gift it is our responsibility to give back. How could I not share something that has brought so much joy and hope to myself and so many others? 

From age of 4 until I was 40, I spent my life in a dance studio. I was both dancing professionally and teaching from the young age of 14. Movement and the wonder of the body have been a part of my daily life for a very long time. My other passion was the science of the human body. I took every course offered on the subject in school and read as much as I could about it. In high school, I distinctly remember going home and learning all 206 bones in one evening. 

I spent many years training dancers in flexibility and not one was ever injured on my watch. I attributed it to the focus in my classes on extensive flexibility training to which I dedicated at least 30 minutes during the warm-up component in each class. In the dance world, extreme flexibility along with strength is a non-negotiable requirement. 

While teaching a group stretch class at a local gym, I had an epiphany. I looked out over my class, which was filled to capacity, and realized that there was a great need in people to become more flexible, indeed senior citizens made a big chunk of the class. This new awareness of the general population needing and, more importantly, wanting help with their flexibility was eye opening and very exciting. My vision was becoming clearer once I enrolled at Arizona State University (ASU), getting my degree and studying Academic dance with a focus in kinesiology. 

As life would have it, at the end of one of my first stretch classes, a guy came up to me and said, "They need what you are doing here at the ASU athletic department." 
It was an opportunity to work with college athletes from 26 different sports. 

The journey of creating Fascial Stretch Therapy began in the summer of 1995 in the weight training room at ASU. It occurred on the bench press when I tied a weight belt around a football player's leg to hold it still while I stretched him. I realized that if I could get proper leverage on this big guy by getting him up off the floor and using a stabilizing strap, I was truly on to something. And the rest, as they say, is history. Each time I had someone on the treatment table in my private practice, I developed the new method a bit more. Between my studies and my private practice I was working upwards of 18 hours a day. I was on the football field in the morning taking the team through group stretches or in the weight room working with individual athletes. I worked for several hours before class and then again after class each afternoon. I would then go to my office and spend time honing the art of my newfound career. It was not unusual for me to spend ten hours a day stretching individual clients.

My hard work paid off quickly - I was asked to travel with the 1996 US men's Olympic Wrestling team. They say if you are living your life's calling, things begin to flow and drop into place and they certainly were! I was the first flexibility specialist to be a part of the Olympic games. 

I knew I would need someone to take care of my clients while I was away for the summer so I found two young people who were interested to learn the technique I had developed. I trained them privately and they became the first two FST students as well as my beginning staff. While my company's name started out as A&F Flexibility Systems, we soon changed it to the Stretch to Win Center based in Tempe, Arizona, USA.

I had a thriving practice for almost 20 years and enjoyed working with clients from many walks of life. A large percentage of my clientele were professional American football players. From 2005-2009 I was fortunate enough to be part of three Super Bowls taking care of almost the entire starting lineup for three different teams. 

It became increasingly clear that there was a growing need to develop the school and that it was time for me to end the chapter of private practice and give it my full attention to teaching others. We closed our office in 2012 to dedicate ourselves to sharing our knowledge of FST with as many as possible. This was accomplished through our professional training school, the Stretch to Win Institute.

The other serendipitous event in my life was to meet Chris, my husband, partner and the love of my life. He has been by my side since the day he walked through my office door in June 1998. Joining creative forces early in FST's genesis allowed Chris and I to evolve and develop the technique together. I choose not to speculate what my life or FST would be like without him. About the Author
Chris Frederick has been a physical therapist/physiotherapist since 1989, focusing on manual therapy - particularly Fascial Stretch Therapy™(FST) and Kinesis Myofascial Integration (KMI)  - along with movement prescription. He has an extensive background in dance, both as a professional dancer of classical ballet, as well as in the specialty of dance physiotherapy. Chris is also well versed in the ancient movement and healing arts of tai chi and qigong. He is a coauthor with Thomas Myers of the chapter on stretching in the seminal book Fascia: the tensional network of the human body edited by Robert Schleip et al.
Ann Frederick is a former professional dancer, having grown up in her Mom's dance studio, starting to dance at the age of 4. She has practiced manual therapy for over 20 years, specifically in the field of flexibility training, focusing on assisted individual stretching, group stretch and dance instruction. Ann originally created a unique system of neuromyofascial manual therapy called Stretch to Win Fascial Stretch Therapy® for the USA Men's Olympic Wrestling Team of 1996. Besides improving professional athletic performance, she soon discovered that FST also rapidly helped other clients with a variety of chronic, unresponsive pain conditions, strength imbalances and other common neuromusculoskeletal disorders.
Chris and his wife Ann are both certified by Thomas Myers in Kinesis Myofascial Integration and are also the authors of the popular book Stretch to Win. Chris and Ann directed their own highly successful center for Fascial Stretch Therapy, physical therapy/physiotherapy, Kinesis Myofascial Integration, sports massage and Pilates for nearly 20 years. They are now Directors of the Stretch to Win Institute, where they offer certification training workshops in FST.

Great for everyone! Set it free with FST!

Fascial Stretch Therapy has changed my life. I am a competitive athlete that up until 2 years ago was in and out of rehab with minor but limiting injuries in my sports of powerlifting and ice hockey. I was fortunate enough to be treated by an FST therapist to help with a nagging hip injury. Two hours later the pain was gone and it did not return! I was amazed and immediately felt compelled to learn about and share FST!

I am now a Level 2 therapist working towards my Level 3 Certification. It is books like this one and Stretch to Win that keep us therapists sharp while teaching those not as educated in stretch therapy about the magic. I was very excited to read this book and it has lived up to my expectations. This book is backed by evidence and science. It takes a look at every angle of recovery and gives you the tools to implement the best recovery methods for yourself or clients. Within the first chapter I had already learned something new. Enough talking, but this book.

wondering if you should buy this book? the answer is yes!

ann + chris frederick are true innovators of our time and we are so fortunate to have this dynamic pair available to us. their passion, energy and devotion to this work is contagious!

in a world where we push, push, push - fascial stretch therapy (fst) brings both client and therapist back to body awareness and to a place where we tune in again - this is where the magic happens, when we listen to our bodies. the words, 'no pain, no gain' DO NOT apply here.

in my 10 year career as a massage therapist, i have seen time and time again that once a client is off the table and gravity and old movement patterns take over all that work is quickly gone. personally, i had always hoped for more lasting change for my clients. and this IS possible with fst (not to mention, much easier on you as a therapist).

as an acupuncturist, i have found that the combining fst with acupuncture makes INCREDIBLE and lasting changes. treating the fascia is the key to making structural and constitutional changes.

if you are currently an fst practitioner, this is an invaluable resource to have in your library. continuous study of this material will enable you to gain a greater understanding of this work, which will translate into much more effective treatments for your client. the book is as well structured as the therapy itself. it contains theory, positioning of client and therapist, movement goals and cue's. it's like having your fst manuals in one beautiful color photo'd package. :)

Great Book! A "Must Have" for FST practitioners.

Truly invaluable for all Fascial Stretch Therapists or anyone with a background working with connective tissue/fascia. Pulls the whole concept together and provides clarity and direction with every client that comes in my door.

For serious professionals and the educated lay person, this book spells out the anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, clinical guidelines and research I've been waiting for - The authors take the subject way beyond guesswork and into established science.

I expect to read this over and over, to refer to it as a resource when I'm in need of a new perspective or to share it with my colleagues, my clients and my students.

Overzealous publisher

Being intimately familiar with the original publication of this trilogy, I can say with utmost disdain that whoever was responsible for taking the liberties of rewriting what was very nearly perfection must have a great fondness for soap operas and should stick with romance novels instead. Not only are there additional passages inserted that were never written by Conrad Richter, there are also altered meanings of existing passages that totally change the flavor and the original intent. There are so many instances in all three volumes that I don't even know where to begin with examples. This is by far the most appalling reprint of an award-winning piece of historical fiction I have ever witnessed. You would do better to find a used copy from the original publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.

Lyrical and poetically beautiful in its simplicity

The first part in "The Awakening Land" trilogy, "The Trees" chronicles the settling of the Ohio wilderness in the early days of the Republic. With an ear toward authenticity, Conrad Richter has seamlessly mixed history with fiction by introducing realistic characters who tamed Ohio when it was the "West." The story is simple, but beautifully told as Richter introduces the Luckett family, especially eldest daughter Sayward. The Lucketts claim the land and eke out a living among a howling wilderness as Sayward becomes the true head of the family. Richter is to be congratulated for introducing a realisitically strong character who, representing nameless and countless pioneer women, is a true hero. Read it for history or read it for fiction, it will touch you and teach you.

Excellent, must-read book.

I read the trilogy back in the '70s and was enthralled. I re-read the books every few years now, and find them richer and more beautiful every time. Richter's way with the language of the people and times is rare and valuable to anyone who is interested in how our country grew. This trilogy is one of the jewels of my book collection and one that I love to share.
