Biased but informative

It is obvious the author is biased to no-holds bar stem cell research. It does have some good information though if you want to know more about the debates of embryo research you just have to be able to read between the lines and think for yourself. I would suggest Stem Cell Now as a less biased report.

The one book to read on this subject

If you're only going to read one book on this subject, or need one book for a paper or report, this is the go-to book. Dartmouth professor Ron Green was on a national commission that studied the use of human embryos in research and he provides an insider's look at the deliberations, politics, and pressures on his commission.
He also offers a balanced, humane, scholarly look at the question, plus accurate information on the embryology and biology surrounding the issue.All in all, a great book.

About the Author
Michael E. McCormick is currently a Corbin A. McNeill Professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the US Naval Academy. He is a Fellow of the Marine Technology Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1976, he became the co-editor of the journal Ocean Engineering and remained so for thirty years. Prior to that, he was the editor of the Marine Technology Society Journal. Professor McCormick was the first recipient of the US Naval Academy Alumni Award for Research Excellence and was also awarded the US Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the US Navy Superior Civilian Service Award. He is the author of Ocean Engineering Wave Mechanics and Ocean Wave Energy Conversion. Professor McCormick received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in civil engineering and a Sc.D. in engineering science from Trinity College, Dublin.

Reasonable, but old

This is a reasonable read with a lot of good information. There are many equations available to help the engineer understand the physics of what is happening. Non-engineers may want to find a different book, or skip over any sections with equations. Unfortunately, there are numerous errors in the equations. One great thing is that there are a lot or "worked examples" in this book so it is possible to test your understanding of the equations (and prove that the book has errors).

Perhaps the bigger problem with the book is that it is so old (1981). Wave power has progress a lot since then. The book is well written and carefully considered. It is unfortunate that no one has had a chance to update the book. On the other hand, the physics of wave power does not change, so that section of the book is fine.

If the author writes a Wave Power 2010, I would definitely pick that up.

Excellent technical reference with basic technology review.

I borrowed this from the local varsity library and appreciated it's excellent readable style, dual unit use and relevant examples so much as to make this a must buy and I have done just that. Sensible comparison of various wave energy conversion technologies show how to assess WEC methods. As a prelude to McCormick's later, more advanced books, this is certainly one that should involve the reader in this fascinating technology.

I bought this book for a class (required text), but I think I only opened the book a few times. It seemed a little dated. I traded it back to amazon after the class was over. I just wasn't very impressed and I didn't find it useful. My class was Ocean Energy Conversion and wave energy conversion was about half the class.

Another awesome resource

I purchased this book after a stretch of constant battles with my two year old that left me feeling like our interactions were primarily negative. I hated how often she was ending up in take a break. Enter this book. I read it quickly. I usually devour books with good advice on something I am struggling with. This book was full of ideas, tips, and tricks to be able to be the parent without always getting into power struggles. It talked about how to get beyond the surface behavior and start to connect with your child's heart and correct the basis for the behavior. It was nice to get advice from the authors that was specific to my child's current developmental level. All in all a great resource. If you want to better understand the authors' heart based approach, I would recommend Parenting Is Heart Work in conjunction with this book.

Not very useful

Despite my previous decision to swear off parenting books, I bought this one after a particularly tough day with a 19 month old and a 3 year old. It was full of obvious advise (toddlers need routines, yelling is bad) with Bible quotations sprinkled on top, but nothing that was truly helpful. Wish I could get my money back.
