But no one steps forward to claim them and Scott and Ted are left with a terrible choice, take in the kids themselves or give them up to CPS, where the boys can’t hide what they are--werewolves.

It’s the wrong time and the wrong kids. But the first rule of the pack is to protect the pack and there is no other choice to make.

Nobody liked Wyatt all that much and his older boy

Darlene and her familiar are at it again. She’s out there in the swamp with her stolen, tree ring Jesus praying for grandkids. Possibly, Darlene is starting to realize she needs to be careful what she prays for. She just might get it. With the sudden death in an automotive accident of some pack members, there are new orphans in the pack. The pack likes to take care of itself, and there is really no way CPS can get their hands on a couple of werewolves. That would affect the safety of all of them. The big problem is the kids are Wyatt’s. Nobody liked Wyatt all that much and his older boy, Charles, looks like he’s shaping up to be as much of a mean spirited bully as his father. Local pack Alpha and Sherriff Scott Dupree and his partner Ted Canedo are the ones who have to take them in. Ted isn’t really ready for that. Ted’s not sure he ever wants kids, not at this time, not at the age of Charles and Timmy, and not with the emotional problems Charles has. But they don’t have a choice.

Scott has a lot of guilt dealing with forcing kids on Ted. He’s also got a lot of issues dealing with his own sexuality and his emotions regarding Ted. It’s been really easy to say he’s in a relationship with a man because he’s got a gay wolf, but there is more to it than that. Now Scott just has to admit that to Ted. And raise some kids. None of it is quite as bad as either of them really expected. Ted finds maybe he actually sort of likes these kids and has no qualms taking care of someone the way kids need. Scott also realizes pretty quick just how happy he is with the boys. Of course, that’s when the pack thinks it’s the perfect time to get involved.

It’s possible to read this book as a standalone, but I wouldn’t recommend it. At least read the first book, Bayou Dreams, if you don’t plan on the whole series. Scott and Ted’s relationship at the beginning of the book was good but certainly imperfect. Suddenly having a couple of kids was in no way a cure for their ills. These guys had a lot to work through all of a sudden and still provide a stable home for grieving kids.

The fractiousness of the pack was interesting. It was a good example of how people accept things in stages. The pack was okay with a gay alpha. And a gay alpha’s mate. Then things were okay with some more gay couples. Then people again had to assess their own prejudices. Is it okay for a gay couple to have a family? Pack members really had to stop and think about that one. And they had to think hard.

Amidst all the pack politics and couple’s struggles was a fairly wounded kid. Charles had spent most of his life as his dad’s victim. Wyatt was not a very nice guy. Charles was dealing with a situation most adults find horrible and doing so while being openly badmouthed by the people around him. I think Charles’ character was written well, if maybe a little expediently written to fit into the confines of the story. I feel the boy probably needs years of therapy, but the narrative flowed well. Overall, I think this was a great continuation of the series, from Darlene to the new additions to Ted and Scott’s family.

It was really nice to meet Scott and Ted again. Please note that the book is centered heavily around two kids who fall in their lap because of the sad occurrence and they are forced to deal with their issues. If you do not like kids featuring heavily in your romances, this book is not for you. I am not a huge fan of kids in romances, but in this book I really enjoyed how that was done. I thought kids helped to deepen the bond between the guys and forced them to look once again at how they want the relationship to develop.

Yes, Scott's mom IS a hoot indeed.

In Bayou des Enfant, the reader gets a chance to see more of Scott and Ted from book one of this series. At the end of book 1, Scott was still adjusting to the fact that he and his wolf were in love with a man. This book picks up a year later and shows that Scott is still struggling to adjust to what that means for his life. He struggles with defining things in terms of two men rather than a man and a woman and often times, lines get blurred and his thoughts are less than ideal. The question of who is the woman comes into play as well as what it means to bottom. Does it mean that he is less of a man. Once again, I applaud the author for tackling these less than PC topics. It shows reality and that not everyone automatically knows the right way to deal with things. We all have to learn somehow, right? And if no one is willing to touch these topics, people will continue to misstep sometimes.

I also like that this story has some real meat to it. It touches on several tough topics including adoption by a gay couple and how the world around them reacts. It touches on bigotry and hatred of anything not “normal” including a troubled 10 year old child. The author once again uses the plot to show that society still has a long way to go before equality is the norm, equality for all, not just the LGBT community.

This one pulled out some strong emotions in me. When the so called adults ignored a poor child just because he had issues and bartered with him to get his younger “normal” brother away from the gays, I wanted to cry. To see a child who had been physically beaten by his own father, then rejected by his pack simply because he was coping the best he could, hurt my heart and reminded me that this world could use a bit more kindness all around.

I enjoyed this story. I loved the character growth and the struggles Scott and ted went through in adjusting to having a family before they were ready. I loved seeing the change in people, once Scott and Ted took a stand and defended those two boys. I loved that the ending was so happy. However, I am curious if this is the last installment of this series. If it is not, I am not sure how exactly the author intends to continue forward with the current cast of characters.

Shade is one bad dude!

I really enjoyed the book and look forward to learning more about the world that was created and the characters that dwell in it. I would go as far as to say that it read like a movie. Shade is one bad dude. I definitely recommend this!

Great fantasy in the tradition of Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance

From what the authors tell us on their website [...], this is the first short story in what is to become a vast world of epic fantasy. The website impressed me enough that I decided to buy this, their first book. The writing is powerfully colorful, and in the first few sentences you are drawn in to another world--the mark of great writing. This book is about a dark-elf named Shade. Shade, it turns out, was trained as an "Unseen", which is an elite form of Dark Elven guardian -- ones who use magic and fighting skill to protect the homeland, and also to carry out more delicate matters, such as assassination. Shade has, for reasons we are only partially treated to (one must assume that the authors will go into his background in even more depth in follow-up books, which are slated for release on the website) left his dark homeland and now lives as an outcast among the human-dominated kingdom of Doljinaar (which although ran by humans, is also filled with an assortment of other creatures--the authors have created a freshly complex family tree of new fantasy races to populate their world--along with an assortment of familiar favorites--and we run into more than a few of them in this story). During the time between becoming an outcast from his homeland and the time we meet him in this story, Shade has used his impressive Unseen abilities to forge a name for himself as a legendary assassin. Now, the rich and powerful seek him out to pay top dollar for his services, which he seems to accept based entirely on the challenge rather than the money. This book is the story of a job that he is hired to carry out, one that pits him against a target as ruthless and powerful as he. We get to follow him on a dangerous journey into the heart of the underworld of one of Doljinaar's most powerful cities.

Overall, I loved this book, and I highly recommend it. Keep 'em coming, guys!

Great Read and Fantastic Ending

I knew this book was about an assassin but I guess somehow had not thought there would be graphic fight scenes etc. So that surprised me. JL gives you so much detail that you feel like you are in every fight scene, bar scene, and in all of Shade's journeys. Very cool.

I am not a huge Sci-Fi kind of guy but loved this book. Shade is a great character and you end up rooting for him as the book progresses.

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. Took it on a trip and finished it.

The ending is epic. Awesome ending. Made me want to look forward to Shade 2 for sure.

I totally recommend it.

We see Paul's family though his youthful eyes -- with all its foibles and fun

I just saw the film Philomena and was troubled once again by that severe Catholic world that I grew up in--where many "celibate" priests felt free to molest small boys while threatening the rest of us with fire and brimstone for having a sexual thought--and where your life was ruined if you were an "unwed mother."

These Memories of a Catholic Boyhood are a different look at that world. Paul uses the dark shadows in his world, and there are plenty, as a backdrop as he keeps digging for what strikes him as making like worth living and fun.

Fletcher’s stay in a Catholic seminary adds depth and understanding to his vivid recollections. This well-written book transcends the confines of Fletcher’s fascinating family to provide a revealing portrait of ethnic (and Fortress) American Catholicism in its heyday. He preserves for us an era and an ethos that has vanished, never to return.

In the Memories of a Catholic Boyhood, Paul captures Fall River and his families past with such grace. The stories told bring you to the cold stoic churches of the east coast with the lightness of Pauls many experiences growing up in a large Catholic family. Himself persuing a carrier in the church up untill he was diagnosed with TB. In the hospital he meet and feel in love with sweet Louise who later became his wife and mother to his seven children. I higly recomend this book. The fluid story telling bring threw strenght, and laughter.

Robert's for Dummies works!

This was actually for my wife, who is currently parliamentarian for a local non-profit organization, which she has some prior experience at. Nonetheless, as soon as the book arrived, she curled up and read it "cover to cover" and made a bunch of notes from it to share with others. Next thing I knew, she was putting her official Robert's Rules away in storage, so like many of the "Dummies" books, this seems to be the practical knowledge most of us actually need.

Unlock the blessing of Giving

The sub-title to this books says it all - "Unleashing the power of a generous heart". In this book the author explores the blessing of giving. He shows in a very easy to read and understand way the kingdom principle of what you lose you gain. In today's world there is an overarching view that we should pursue wealth, hold onto wealth, and use our wealth for our personal gain. However, God's principle is different from that of the world. It is that we should give freely, and that in doing so we will get more.

This book shows us how to break the bondage of wealth and break into a the freedom and blessings of giving freely what has been given to us. He also shows how to trust completely in the provision of the Lord. Many Christians say they trust that God will provide all their needs yet spend countless hours stressing and worrying over bills and how they will provide. In this book the author explores the truth in God's word and shows Christians how to live in complete confidence of God's provision. In this he also shows again that the key to that provision is a generous heart - the heart that gives without worrying about how the other will be met.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to see the greatness of God at work in their lives.

I have read numerous books on Christian Giving and all of them had something interesting to say, but Che Ahn captured the essence of Christian giving in a clear and concise way. I truly recommend this book for anyone interested in finding out what Christian giving must look like. Bravo to Che Ahn.
